I’ve seen Cocaine Bear - it was better than expected, but the 6.0 imdb rating kind of does it justice. The first half was good, because somewhat unexpected, but then it turned into a more generic b-movie that takes itself too seriously.
Other things i’ve watched, or in the process of watching.
Beef (netflix) - kinda boring if I’m honest. The whole series revolves around that one premisse, the initial encounter between the two leads. Stopped watching after the fourth episode or so, while mostly being on my ipad, just couldn’t get excited anymore.
Daisy Jones and the Six (prime) - for the music and 1970s lovers. High quality Hollywood, so terrific production and so on, characters well written, good music, very layered story so far as I’m starting episode 5. Somewhat predictable though, and the main characters reflecting back doesn’t do it for me, sometimes they already spoil what’s going to happen. Still a definite and big recommendation.
Firefly Lane (netflix) - watched the earlier episodes so figured just watch it until the end. Gets more sentimental, lost some of its initial spark, but still watcheable if only for the two young leads.
Extraction (netflix) - good action movie from a few years back. Never heard of it before, but really enjoyable. Not as over the top as John Wick these days, but like a good no nonsense 80s/90s action flick.
After finishing Daisy Jones, I can’t wait to start with Succession.
Last night it was a Man called Otto . With Tom Hanks . I didnt make it past the opening credits.
Turned to . A tourists guide to love im a sucker for romantic dramas. Yes .
Tonight .Boogie Night’s with Burt Reynolds and Dirk Diggler . Aka Brock Landers .
Good bye to the 70’s Hello 80’s I remember them well .
“What is best in life? Conan?”
“To crush your enemies. To see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of the women.”
They really don’t make 'em like this anymore. Milius and Oliver Stone manage a script that is mercifully short on dialogue and long on epic vistas, barbarian combat, and James Earl Jones in a deeply unattractive wig.
Never was there more perfect casting than Schwartenegger in his prime as Conan. Someone you could readily believe was the biggest, baddest sword-swinging, furry-boot wearing hunk of meat on screen. The movie plods along like the boy-adventure books that inspired it, and feels to me very much like the hundreds of D&D campaigns it inspired. Episodic, it isn’t 'til the last third of the movie when all the pieces have been assembled that whole meat of the adventure happens, but it’s such a grand old time. I mean, Arnold PUNCHES A CAMEL. That’s worth a watch just by itself.
Fun fact: John Goodman’s character of Walter in The Big Lebowski is inspired in large part by John Milius.
i’ve watched every season and they are currently up to 15. it can be tough to find in the States without a vpn, but some episodes are on YouTube, Prime, and Pluto. there is also a custom streaming service with a 30 day free trial. it’s just funny people doing funny things. a winning formula.
Absolutely a favourite of mine. This series is fab. I love also seeing how the dynamics play out amongst the contestants. Sometimes it’s quite unexpected.
As you are based in the states, I want to ask: How familiar are you with these comedians and performers?
Watching Richard Hammond’s Workshop tomorrow. Season 1 was good. Hopefully season 2 won’t disappoint me.
Can anyone recommend some British comedy movies to watch? I liked Whiskey Galore and Scottish Mussel. Tried watching IMDB recommendations but turn out to be not so funny. Lol.
the vast majority (90%?) of the performers i’ve never seen/heard of prior to taskmaster. it is the only frame of reference i have for them, although i now have recognition when some of them pop up on other projects (Guz Khan was in the very good ‘our flag means death’ recently).
This past weekend we enjoyed streaming The Lost King (rental) and Air (included with Amazon Prime). Not blockbuster movies, just good storytelling that drew us in.
