What have you been watching lately? 2024 Edition

I enjoyed that too, glad to hear the 2nd season has been approved. Guess I will keep the Peacock account.

It’s on my list. Do you like it?

Finished up Carmen Curlers season 2 and this week watched first episodes of Black Doves and Marlowe Murder Club. Also working through Man on the Inside with Ted Danson and only one more epsiode of What we do in the Shadows. Very sad. Liked the second season of the Diplomat and going to start Elsbeth second season next week. Also finished up We are Lady Parts which is excellent.

I still need to watch the latest season of We are Lady Parts. Absolutely loved the first one.

I imagine you may enjoy it even more than season #1, if that is possible.

We started watching Conan Must Go. The Herzog intro alone is worth it, and so far, we’ve been enjoying his trips to Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland.

First the cozy, comfy mystery:

Not sure how they do it, but the BBC has made a murder mystery show something comfy to watch with a cuppa. I also really enjoy shows with David Mitchell. There’s nothing intense about this series, it’s just a nice, low stress way to decompress in the evening.

If you want to be blown away by incredible cinematography and also thank the stars we still have David Attenborough with us:

Asia is the best thing I’ve seen all year. Just amazing.

Orpheus (1950) - dir. Jean Cocteau

A fight breaks out at the poet’s cafe between the famous Orpheus and jealous rivals. During the fight, a rival poet is killed. A mysterious princess takes Orpheus and the body away with her equally mysterious chauffeur.

Thus begins Cocteau’s version of the Greek tragedy of Orpheus, who must rescue his beloved from the underworld, and does so on the condition he never gaze at her again.

And, what can you say? It’s all so allegorical and French. It looks gorgeous, of course. And Cocteau really gets a lot of mileage out of some clever in-camera tricks with double room mirror shots, reversed film, and other simple but expertly deployed tricks to lend a little supernatural shimmer to the proceedings.

3.5 of 5 jealous French artístes.

We greatly enjoyed pretty much all seasons in that series, so I’m looking forward to this one.

Best to be watched on our big home screen & projector setup back home

Unfortunately, there seems to only have been one season of this, so we had to find something else for light late-night viewing. No Good Deed was able to fill that slot — good cast, decent writing, etc.

Before that, however, we watched the abysmal Carry-on with Jason Bateman, who must really need money these days, or was abducted to be in this Very Bad “Thriller.”

How this steaming pile of shit got 88% on Rotten Tomatoes is beyond me. Bad writing, bad acting, and not a moment of excitement. 2 hours I’ll never get back :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

The Veil on Hulu (via FX) with Elizabeth Moss and Josh Charles among others.

It’s a twisty spy series with a great cast. Quite intense, and quite enjoyable.

Finished No Good Deed, which I assume is over with since the final episode resolved the ‘mystery,’ but who knows with TV these days… a few loose ends might justify another season :woman_shrugging: 'twas light & entertaining enough, although I was a bit shocked just how badly Denis Leary aged :scream: maybe all that smoking in his younger days…

Also finished the 3rd season of Sex Education, which is occasionally uneven, but overall engaging and, at times, painful to watch — the final episode comes to mind, where a non-binary character is being shown how to safely bind without continuing to do physical damage to herself.

Looking forward to the 4th and final season.

Bahaha. We just started watching the show last week, and I had the same reaction — of course, I’d already forgotten about your post here.

Like. Nails. On. A. Chalkboard.

Other than that, we’re enjoying it.

I got through a few episodes, but then I drifted away. It’s there on the back burner if I need it.

Brain candy.

Black Doves, which @Annegrace had mentioned a few days ago. Much fun so far.

I’ve been enjoying Industry (HBO Max for me), just started season 3. It’s a show about young people starting out working at an investment bank, and with all the shady dealings around this, all for personal gain. Basically, screwing clients and co-workers.

I actually worked in such an environment for 5 years, as a young professional, and half of that time in London as well. And let me just say, in real life, it is more or less like pictured here. Less cocaine (at least for me!), but more hectic. One of the writers definitely knows this bizz: a lot of jargon, like using the word ‘shop’ to describe a bank, is real.

The first season is very much a depiction of working at an investment bank, so may not be fun for everyone, but the following seasons are broadening the story lines out to a more Succession-like show. Hence, it’s also becoming more fun, and as such appealing to a wider audience.

Which kinda explains why The Guardian put this show on number 5 of best shows in 2024!

At number 10 of the Guardian list above is Nobody Wants This (netflix), a romcom with Kristen Bell. I just couldn’t get into this - predictable and just boring characters overall. Honestly, I have more fun watching xmas Hallmark movies lol…

Yea, a little too cutesy for me, and the leads have zero chemistry.

It’s a long way from Where The Heart Is, or Last Tango in Halifax, or Lark Rise to Candleford for Ms. Lancashire.
