What have you been watching lately? 2024 Edition

I’m watching season 2 of Silent Witness (1997) on BritBox, 2 episodes with a 25 year old Idris Elba.

Please enjoy my friend Hens on PBS’s Pan Pals, in which he swaps recipes - his traditional Dutch soup (snert) for his partner’s traditional Dominican soup (sancocho).

I found a copy but no subtitles.
So, I’m rewatching Ridley Scott’s sci-fi series, Raised by Wolves. Really enjoyed the musical score as well as the film’s message.

Baby Reindeer is cleaning up at the Emmy’s. How about that for groundbreaking!

I found it too mean-spirited. I stopped watching.

Which is one reason amongst many I was surprised by the Emmy voters and the audiences reaction at the award show. BUT- the actor/director/producer was the one explaining how HE felt to be accepted and that sorta changed my overall reaction to the film. It’s his life story.

I realize this.

As a female, I identified with the female in the story. It might touch a nerve more often, with women. Not all women, of course.

It came across as misogynistic to me, whatever his story is.

The thing with the arts, is that there is artistic intent, as well as how the work comes across to the viewer or listener.

Whatever the artist meant is important, but sometimes what comes across to the viewer is very different, depending on the viewer’s lens and experiences.

I don’t have much empathy for men who label women clingy or call women crazy. I think the trope is tired, and lazy.

Usually, in my experience, when a woman becomes neurotic after a break-up, after being played, or being led on, there’s a reason for this. These types of movies reinforce the Crazy Ex Girlfriend trope, and I think that trickles down to make men and women have an even harder time connecting.

Very fair. I didn’t consider that.

I’d never even heard of Baby Reindeer until last night’s Emmy show. I’ve now searched a few boards whose reviews I trust and found that exact same reaction to be almost universal. People watched no more than four episodes. The acting must be stupendous but I don’t know if I’d want to find out. The Rotten Tomatoes reviews were very good though.

I mean. The woman was a stalker who was obsessed with him. It’s a shame you didn’t continue, bc it’s not like the main character gets away as being The Good Guy.

I thought it was incredibly well acted, directed, very nuanced, and Jessica Gunning was absolutely fantastic in it. Very uncomfortable at times, but one of the most memorable shows I’ve seen in the recent past.

And I don’t remember shit these days.

re: Baby Reindeer. totally understandable. it’s not an easy show to watch. but i would argue that if you haven’t watched past episode 4 you haven’t really seen the show. what the show starts as, is not how it finishes. easily one of the better things i saw on television this year – as was Shogun, which i was delighted to see acknowledged by the award givers.

We really enjoyed this version of Shogun. It was remarkable in so many ways.

And the debate over The Bear being a comedy vs drama was mentioned several times during the Emmys.

We watched a couple of episodes of Chimp Crazy, which is similar to Tiger King — perhaps no surprise there, given that it’s the same director — and TBH I didn’t think I could get through the first 5 min.

One of the main characters is such a grotesque caricature of a person, and the animal abuse so blatant… but it was obviously intriguing enough to stick to it. Watching the last two tonight, and then I hope we can start on Bad Monkey, which has been on the list forevah.

He Said vs She Said.

edit:

The truth is usually somewhere in the middle.

It’s a huge red flag when someone, anyone, says their ex was a stalker or crazy.

We started watching Silent Witness, starting with Season 26, rather than at the beginning. The earliest seasons aren’t available on BritBox

We like it, so far.

I’m not convinced he ever thought they were a couple. Kind to a stranger at first, trying to know her but dating was her interpretation. When she was rejected, stalking began. At least that’s my impression having watched the entire series.

After I watched it, I watched three comedies just to clear my tv slate!

Didn’t mean to delete myself, lol…

Enjoying an interesting rotation of Only Murders in the Building, the superb Slow Horses, Moonflower Murders on PBS and trashy but entertaining The Perfect Couple. Also laughed out loud a bunch of times watching the new series-English Teacher. Kind of a grown up more twisted Abbot Elementary.

As several other users pointed out, it helps to actually have watched the entire show before coming to conclusions — one’s personal history has nothing to do with the script :woman_shrugging:t3:
