What have you been watching lately? 2024 Edition

Oh, since you put that under a comment from me, I thought it was a response to something I wrote.

Just wanted to give you credit for the observation. I thought that was fairly impressive.

I teach tv writing, so I kind of have to know this stuff.

Finally got to see it today, and your review was spot on. The cat is the absolute star of the movie and steals the show.

Agree on the mystery malady (presumably cancer, tho) & superhuman powers. I also thought the ending was a little melodramatic.

I’ll admit I teared up a bit when she gave Frodo away, but I’m a tender-hearted bish

I teach tv writing

Oh neat!! Are you strictly a teacher or have you worked on shows?

I have worked on things that could have been shows, but were not! Because they were bad. I was not the main writer on them. I am too lazy to build a show from the ground up by myself.

Simone Biles Rising. Two episodes just dropped on Netflix. I’m a sucker for documentaries about individuals who are considered leaders in their field (and personally, I think she is amazing), and have a compelling redemption story to tell in addition to their accomplishments. Extremely well done so far.

Just finished watching the food critic-themed Columbo epi Under the glass.

I forgot just how much my mom and I used to love watching Columbo together, and I may have had a bit of a crush on him…

Watching him now blowing his cigar smoke all over everyone I find that pretty obnoxious. But he’s still a cutie

Loop Track (2023) - dir Thomas Sainsbury

Ian is a mousy, nervous little man who is clearly not in the best state. He’s come out to a local NZ forest’s hiking trails (the titular loop tracks) for some alone time, possibly to recover and think about whatever it is he’s clearly been through. Along the way he is awkwardly joined by a few others, all of whom seem kind of oblivious to his distress at being with them.

Then Ian begins seeing a dark shape stalk them through the woods. Is he paranoid? Is something out there? Is it one of the other hikers?

This is a great little ride, all careful slow buildup to a third act that I genuinely did not see coming. So kudos for that. Another film that seems content to simply be a scary movie without needing a whole lot of deeper subtext.

Worth a watch if you like these sorts of things.

I just started, unfortunately with season 4, which I just finished. Not sure how that happened.

Finding some great stuff on Tubi as I continue to look for movies I’ve never seen before. The latest finds are two hard hitting WW2 flicks

Last night was The Victors (1963) directed by Carl Foreman and featuring George Peppard, George Hamilton, and host of other familiar faces. Also noteworthy for several European beauties including Merlina Mercouri and Romy Schneider.

Today’s feature was Attack (aka Attack!) from 1956 directed by Robert Aldrich and starring Jack Palance, Lee Marvin, and Eddie Albert as a coward. Plus other faves such as Buddy Ebsen and Richard Jaeckel.

Love Annika - dreary and depressing - perfect! My husband loves it too.

Don’t forget to check out the Split! I think we watched one episode of Annika and just never went back. Oh well.

A reasonably decent horror flick recommended in the NYT, Thine Ears Shall Bleed.

Oh, and we watched this The Simpsons episode The Tipping Point with dinner. Surprised nobody’s mentioned it here yet, actually.

Watched S1 of Condor, another of the young, idealistic CIA analyst type shows. Enjoyed it quite a bit. There’s a S2, but I’m curious if Amazon might pick it up to continue further in the style of Jack Ryan. Max Irons is hard to resist.

Also The Little Drummer Girl on Acorn, which was good not great, but I was down the spy path.

This was after finishing S3 of the fantastic Mirzapur, a crime drama based in rural India with a superb cast and great storyline. Don’t think it’s been dubbed in English yet, but there are subtitles.

Now exploring Acorn / BritBox to find something different. Might start Killing Eve again (from the beginning, because I don’t remember most of what I already watched a while back).
