What have you been watching lately? 2024 Edition

Meryl flippin’ Streep upgrades pretty much anything

They sort of imply that about her character late in the season.

Fourth season starts next month!

Baltimore Ravens Super Bowl hero Jacoby Jones has passed away at age 40. https://www.baltimoresun.com/2024/07/14/ravens-jacoby-jones-dies/

Awful news and too much of it as well! My Dad (98) was hysterically funny last night when he proudly stated that he’d outlived Richard Simmons by 22 years! Because of his status as a “fitness guru” of course. He takes no joy when people pass, but it was a funny moment. I also mentioned that he’d outlived Jack LaLane too, for those that remember him.

And let’s not forget Dr. Ruth! Although I’d say 96 is a pretty amazingly long life

Finished season 3 of Only Murders, which seemed to be running out of steam in the last few epis. Too bad Jane Lynch wasn’t in many of them, but presumably we’ll see more of her in the next one… if we watch.

Take 2 on Justified: City Primeval. I loved Justified when I finally watched it last year. It was good to have another season, but all the bad guy stuff was so much better before!

Yeah, when you get ringers like Acclaimed Character Actress Margo Martindale ™, Jeremy Davies, Sam Elliott and Walter Goggins as your bad guys, it’s hard to keep up standards like that. Justified had a fantastic rogues gallery.

I really liked Raylan’s interactions with his daughter in City Pimeval. I don’t NEED another installment, but if they wanted to do one more with Boyd, I wouldn’t be mad.

The bear. Im not sure what episode. Thomas Keller removing a wishbone from a whole chicken. And trussing for the oven . Love it . How many times have i watched Jaques Pepin do this on his show . I lost count. Priceless.

We just watched the first 4 episodes of The Bear S3. What I haven’t seen anyone remark on is the fantastic way this show plays with form. It’s little filmic experiments stuffed into a sitcom-sized container. The first episode was a fabulous catch-up of where folks had been AND where they’re at, all told in with barely any dialogue. The heavy lifting is all in the framing and editting. Just gorgeous!

They play with structure, too. Sure, sometimes, just like a sitcom, there’s an A and a B story and they all collide at the end. Here, sometimes, no B story? Just one single theme.

I love the characters and all the actors are in top form.

And can I send a shoutout to whoever the music supervisor is? The first two seasons were just great, and it looks like S3 will be too. What a great cover of ‘Save It For Later’.

I wonder if the reduced season size helps keep quality up. Maybe American TV can take some notes from the UK, with their love of short seasons, less than 5 season runs, and then they peace out. No time for the joke to get stale.

No notes. More, please.

Interesting!

I don’t know that anyone called it fantastic, but I got an inkling about that here;

Not about the framing and editing stuff though.

I’m not sure what this means. There is a wide range of editing styles across both comedy and drama.

I meant @Lectroid made observations about the framing and editing, among other things, that were not among the previous comments on The Bear thread.

Most of it is till over my head though, especially since I haven’t watched the latest seasons. On re-reading my comments, I was supposed to have been giving it “another go”. I’ve apparently been doing it vicariously.

We watched episode 4 last night. I think my big problem is that the main guy, Carmy, has gone from being an interesting fish out of water character to kind of an annoying selfish egotist. Probably more interested in everyone else in the kitchen at this point. And wondering why Sydney puts up with him and figuring that drama is building up…Also was the guy she ran into at the subway another chef or a restaurant critic?

Also has anyone watched Land of Women?
