Cashed in a gift certificate and went to see Inside Out 2. It was good - all Pixar movies are good - but not as good as the first one, which I know because I did not go through a pack of tissues this time and get a headache from trying not to sob. I just got a little misty. I also wondered why a movie about a girl hitting puberty had zero about her (spoiler alert for those who haven’t seen it) starting to think about sex.
I saw the first one, but will likely not watch the second one. Found this review interesting, however.
I liked Turning Red a lot more than Inside out.
We watched Nosferatu with a live orchestra playing the original score by Hans Erdmann (1922), newly arranged by Hans Brandner in 2018 at a movie theater last night. It. Was. Incredible.
I’d never seen the whole movie, and it’s pretty amazing. The orchestra was fantastic, too — the woodwinds (bassoon, oboe, clarinet) in particular. They got a STO very much deserved applause. What a fab experience!
I had a very similar trajectory to the person who wrote that piece, and I also thought making Riley’s possible queerness a “deep dark secret” would be a terrible mistake. So I was both relieved and irritated.
i liked Turning Red fine, but it did not affect me emotionally the way the Inside Outs did.
I found both a little difficult to relate to, but I am mos def not part of the audience they’re geared at. I might also simply remember Turning Red better bc I watched it more recently.
I’ll probably check out Inside Out 2 when it’s on demand.
I watched the 3 episodes available of World Eats Bread whilst hiding from the heat this weekend. Enjoyable, thx for pointing the series out.
amazing. years ago, i saw this on the big screen in a double bill with Shadow of the Vampire (2000). it didn’t have the benefit of a live orchestra, but was still enthralling. much was lost when silent film was abandoned. speaking of which, i’ve been re-watching one of the last great silents. Napoleon (1927). it periodically shows up in the interstitials of the web. https://ok.ru/video/1369258724037 . worth a re-watch if you have 5 1/2 hours to spare.
Nice! I hope there are more episodes coming.
Watched the first episode last night and assuming they follow the book, it’s a bit weird to know the ending. Someone mentioned on another thread that it’s got a 1980’s Basic Instinct/Fatal Attraction vibe where the women is a femme fatale luring the hero (in this case Jake G) into an illicit affair. I don’t know, not sure how this becomes 8 hour series and kind of wish they had found some new material to dramatize. My husband reminded me of the ending when I first mentioned the show and I’m not happy with him!
Mother of God.
Watched the final of Ciao house last night. The first hour was a bit chaotic but overall I liked the show and liked the winner. It’s more reality show angst and drama than some other cooking shows but food and setting were great and I liked the judges.
I started Great American Recipe and it looks good. A good cross section of amateur cooks and cuisine represented-Mexican and Central America, African, Italian, southern US, Asian and a guy with German heritage. Makes you appreciate how diverse this country is and all the interesting varied food available. My Irish and Swedish heritage didn’t have any great dishes passed down but my mother did make kaldomar a Swedish stuffed cabbage dish that I thought was delicious when I was growing up.
So relieved that you know who didn’t win on Ciao House!
I’m also enjoying Great American Recipe. It’s much more positive than other shows, and I’m always finding things I would love to eat!
Hmmm. Haven’t watched the last episode yet.
There’s a group that tours North America (maybe the EU?) playing live original scores to classic silent films. They are crammed “The Invincible Czars”. I’ve seen them
do Nosferatu, The Cabinet of Dr. Calligari, and Metropolis.
Highly recommend looking them up if you dig that sort of thing.
I just finished watching Dark Matter on Apple TV. I thought it was very engrossing until the last two episodes, which got a bit convoluted. You have to suspend ALL disbelief to enjoy this show. Joel Edgerton was excellent.
It was a great experience, and we might do it again whilst in Berlin. The accompanying orchestra was the house orchestra, and they were amazing. Really impressive.
Thx for the tip about the touring orchestra, I’ll have a look-see
I saw the Alloy Orchestra accompany Nosferatu many moons ago at Roger Elbert’s film festival in Champaign IL. Scared the beejeezuz out of me and I loved every minute of it.
Since we’re on the subject of Nosferatu, I feel compelled to drop this. Eggers. Dafoe. Please, take my money!
Please, take my money!
Omg. I’m so out of the loop lately, so I thanks for your post. Take my money again and again and again.
