What have you been watching lately? 2024 Edition

Me too. I’m watching Slow Horses and Ted Lasso. They’re both great. Watched Killers Of The Flower Moon, harrowing movie, very well done. I think tonight I will watch Lessons In Chemistry since I read the book. Also watching the last season of Boardwalk Empire.

My PIC tried to get me into Slow Horses. I love Gary Oldman, so maybe I’ll give that one a shot again.

I thought the first season of Ted Lasso was perfect for the time it came out (early covid days), and a lot of sarcastic humor made up for the slightly saccharine tone of the show.

I couldn’t get through more than two epis of the second season, however. Too sweet, no bite.

We’re having a friend over tonight to watch American Fiction.

Change of plans. Watched Dream Scenario with Nicholas Cage instead. I’d just recently read a review in a NYer issue (bc I am still several months behind hahaha), and was intrigued. I thought it was fun - it’s Crazy Nick Cage after all

Second movie was Somewhere Quiet. It was strange… stranger than the Nick flick - which is saying a lot.

I’m working my way slowly through Salt of the Earth, Wim Wenders’ biopic of photographer Sebastiao Salgado. Slowly, because nearly every scene is one of his photos, and I have to pause and ponder the pictures as if I were in a gallery. On Blu-ray from my library.

I guess I’ll be sticking with The Regime for now, as last night’s episode had a few intriguing developments.

Last night’s episode of Curb had a few funny food-related situations, but overall the show is a shadow of its heyday. It’s a-ok for a few chuckles, but so much of it seems incredibly forced.

At a hotel this weekend and landed on The Other Guys. I see no mention of the movie here. Eva Mendes and Will Farrell had the best scenes. Lots of great cameos. 79% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not that that means anything.,But like I told my husband, we’d need a joint to get through this one the next time around.

We watched Taika Waititi’s Next Goal Wins, a fairly formulaic feel-good movie based on the true story of the abysmal American Samoa soccer team. What makes it a little different is the direction (of course), and that most of the script is improvised. The Samoan soccer team includes Jayah, a fa’afafine (third gender in Polynesian society), who was/is the first non-binary / trans woman to compete in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. Feel good, indeed :dancer:t2: :transgender_flag:

The second feature was Cat Person with Nicholas Braun (Greg the Egg of Succession fame) and Emilia Jones, “a razor-sharp exploration of the horrors of dating.” I thought it was really well done, especially from the female perspective. There’s a pivotal scene I think most women can relate to, in a super-cringe way…. actually there are several. Highly recommended.

Needed a break from Hawaii 5-0 and Route 66 so I broke down and watched Ricky Stanicky. It’s second-rate Farrelly Brothers at best, but John Cena is very funny. Also, Melbourne makes a lovely Providence.

Glad to hear that The Regime is getting better-will dive back in. I’m also going to start Apples Never Fall, I liked the book and like the actors in it. Finished up Funny Woman on PBS and found it delightful. Great swinging 60’s setting and music. Started Nolly, a British series with Helen Bonham Carter set in 70’s/80’s London and Carmen Curlers, a Danish series that looks intriguing. Extraordinary is also fun series. Looking forward to new Top Chef, Palm Royale and Gentleman in Moscow.

I love this film.

Ooh, I didn’t realize that had come out. I love the short story.

We’re under the impression that you’re almost nobody who matters in UK TV unless you’ve been on Coronation Street (or Midsomer Murders, or, of course, preferably both). Okay, we overstate our case, but you get the idea . . .
