What have you been watching lately? 2024 Edition

I’ll miss Susie the most.

In case you haven’t seen this (should be a gift link):

Read that this morning  There’s also a fun, roughly 9 min long compilation of her and Larry dicking it out.

And no need for a gift link - I have a subscription (but thank you anyway ).

I don’t understand what that means.

I’ve been watching both of those!

Didn’t realize my error until it was too late to edit. Should have said “had us wanting the NEXT episode right away”!

Recipes for Love and Murder

I just came across this on Prime but it’s an Acirn show-- it is quite delicious, if a bit slow-paced

South African show based on a book series. Small town, recipes weaved into the story, an agony aunt, a bit of romance, and murder. Like a younger Miss Marple plus Julia Childs plus a bit of romantic fluff.

Adding that to my watchlist! How many seasons have there been? I see one season on Prime.

I am finding myself insanely caught up in thinking about how old the main character’s little girl is supposed to be. The whole premise, or at least some of it is tied to the main character questioning the little girl, in a somewhat long and complicated sentence, about whether the little girl saw what she saw in the he nanny cam. During the remaining episodes the little girl is portrayed as non verbal.

1 so far - show started in 2022

We enjoyed the Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop,
about recording the song We are the World.

Lots of egos in that room but they pulled it off.

I saw a bit of that last night - gonna return to it.

The Cassandra Cat (aka When the Cat Comes) (1963) - dir. Vojtěch Jasný

An absolutely charming Czech fantasty/fable about a little village visited by a performing troup with a magic cat with tiny sunglasses. The glasses are necessary, you see, because when the cat gazes upon people unobstructed, they are revealed for their true nature and deeds. Liars and hypocrits will turn violet, the unfaithful turn yellow, and those truly in love turn bright red!

In one corner we have the officious headmaster of the school and one who believe taxidermied animals are the ultimate teaching aid. Facts! Facts! Facts! In the other, the children’s favorite teacher, Robert, who encourages their creativity and imagination. He brings in village elder Oliva (actor Jan Werich, who has the eye-twinkling charisma of the best Santa Claus ever) to tell them stories. Hilarity and a 10 minute wacky magic / dance sequence ensue.

Beautiful art direction, lovely low-tech vfx work. As I exited the theater my proclamation was “Well, as the kids surely no longer say, that was ‘totes adorbs’!”

It was. Two tiny magical cat thumbs way up.

Czech tv and cinema was incredibly inventive & imaginative in the 60s and 70s, and produced hugely popular movies and kids series at the time. I remember watching so many of them! They also made the most feminist version of Cinderella ever. I wanted to be her. Badass.

Great sense of humor, too.

There are a number of companies who have discovered this (The trove of 60’s-70’s Eastern European media unseen by most Western audiences) and are making them more widely available. It helps that various foundations across the region have taken up restoration efforts for some of these underseen gems.

It’s really neat to see.

He was my directing professor in film school! I love him! I remember him talking about that movie in class: “You see thief! Thief is gray like mouse.”

“Replacing Chef Chico”

So far (episode 1) lots of screaming and cussing in the kitchen by the chef , but also lots of close ups of food prep, and what sounds like Tagalog.

Still haven’t gotten through the first episode of season 2 of “The Bear”. Not because of it being stressful though.

First epi of Curb’s final season did not disappoint. I’ve had my share of … exchanges with the ever-so-unhelpful SIRI myself, so that was a highly recognizable first few minutes . Looking forward to the rest of the season.

Red Carpet show was what it was: toothpicks discussing what other toothpicks are wearing. At least Billie won for Best Song, tho :star_struck:

I seem to be watching a lot of Outlander recently, since Mrs. ricepad got hooked on it. I haven’t watched enough to know the storyline, but they sure do have a lot of sex!
