What Did You Drink Today (non-wine) #2?

Saccharine has a worse aftertaste for me.

As far as I know, saccharine hasn’t been sold in Canada for over 30 years.

I’ve been using Splenda since it became available, with no side effects and no aftertaste. No side effects from saccharine either, but it tastes awful. I think the tonic water producers think that its taste would be masked by the quinine, but it isn’t.

The side effects of both are more towards your gut microbiome

Say more?

There are a number of studies (just one example below) which might show that many artificial sweeteners have a potentially negative effect on your gut microbiome (diversity). The problem as with many such food related studies if course is they are either run in animals (question of translatability but animals are the standard for tox studies in any drug development and so we have a reasonable understanding) or in relatively small human studies (not powered enough). Overall, it might be best to take from time to time the calories of real sugar vs a few unknown with no calories

Thanks for the link, will investigate.

A martini.

It actually wasn’t very good, so after a few sips I poured the rest into a gin and tonic, with that homebrew tonic I posted about earlier.

I put a little dry vermouth in my G&Ts.

My first and last probiotic soda. Blech.

Also, a decent cortado. Kinda surly barista

There are some good ones like Wildwonder and especially evolution (which has ~20% fruit juice and taste very good)

I haven’t seen those in Canada yet. I am willing to try them if I see them.

I was picking up a bottle of the house gin at TJ’s, and I saw this pre-mixed Hendrick’s martini. Shaken, with olives, natch. It was very good. I haven’t had Hendrick’s before, will keep it in mind.

I very strongly dislike the taste of sweeteners other than cane sugar, honey, maple syrup, and the like, and things like aspartame, sorbitol, etc. can give me headaches. On the subject of the dear old biome, I observe that when I feed my sourdough starter, it proliferates exuberantly, and from that I conclude that adding live cultures to my gut should not require large amounts. So I try to use with regularity small amounts of things that include live cultures, including home made vinegars (I love my home made red and white, but lament that I cannot make anything that compares favorably to Banyuls red), Good Culture cottage cheese and sour cream, live culture yoghurt, home made kimchi (and sauerkraut and pickles), etc. I am always looking for delicious ways to incorporate more live cultures into my diet.
