What are your favorite recipes of all time?

Thanksgiving is my favorite meal … not to mention we have the same dinnerware - Petite Fleur. I’ve had mine for 40 years. :joy:

Wish I had 8, not 4, settings!

My favorite meal too!

My daughter always says, let’s use paper plates … hell no, not for Thanksgiving, not after all that effort cooking a delicious meal.

Some contributors provided links to recipes that are available online. I would echo @linguafood 's suggestion to ask for recipes if you are interested in specific dishes. We’re a friendly bunch on this forum and we would be more than happy to share recipes.

Four come to mind:

  • Cabbage/ramen slaw. I’ve been making this since I was in high school and it keeps morphing.
  • Caesar salad dressing from Once Upon a Chef. I don’t claim its the best one out there but is very easy and family loves it.
  • Curried pearl onions. Thanksgiving staple and winter treat when I feel like peeling those babies.
  • Chocolate cake from the back of a Hersey’s cocoa can years ago. I prefer a cakey cake rather than a fudgy one and this always does the trick. Plus, both kids always request for their birthdays.

Oh, thanks for the reminder! I have a great Caesar dressing I like to make (raw egg, lemon, garlic & anchovies smashed up together to a paste, lotsa black pepper, olive oil, parm), but I don’t remember where I found it.

Agree… If I know I want to take a picture for Hungry Onion, I’ll plate the meal at the kitchen counter, take the picture, then serve it at the dinner table.

We do like a little (very) soft music in the background when we eat, but dinner is always a time to enjoy the food, talk a little and have some quiet relaxed interaction.

Well, Sunshine wanted to chime in with her two favorites… (she couldn’t pick just one)
Breaded Hamburgers or Breaded Hamburger Steak

And… she has been asking for a Bell Pepper Pizza, so I’ll need to make that again soon. My last bell pepper pizza was on a sheet pan and not my round screen, so I owe her a nice Bell Pepper Pizza.

My usual reply for “favorite recipe” is Mom’s Lemon Pot Roast, which I’ve posted for years on FB, Chowhound, and here on HO. Recipe below with a picture from January 2021. But I’ve also been known to make it in the middle of the summer. Cravings cannot and will not be denied.

Mom’s Lemon Pot Roast

Recipe By :
Serving Size : 6 Preparation Time :2:30
Categories : Beef Pot Roasts

Amount Measure Ingredient – Preparation Method

3 lbs chuck roast
1 cup dry red wine
1/4 cup lemon juice – or more to taste
1 tsp garlic powder
1/4 cup onion – finely chopped (I sometimes use more - maybe up to 1/2 cup?)
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp celery salt – (I omit or I use 1/4 tsp celery seed)
1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper – more to taste
1/2 tsp thyme – more to taste
1/2 tsp ground ginger – again, more to taste

Brown meat well on all sides in a little bit of olive oil in a large Dutch oven. Add 1 cup of wine OR 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup dry red wine and simmer, covered, for 1 hour.

Meanwhile, blend remaining ingredients in tightly covered clean jar by shaking all ingredients together. Add to beef. Simmer another 1 to 1-1/2 hours, occasionally basting roast or turning it over in the liquid.

Remove meat to platter. Mix together 2 heaping tablespoons flour with a little water in a jar. Whisk into liquid in pot and simmer to make a gravy. Carve roast into slices (or chunks, as the meat often falls apart), put on a platter and add 1 thinly sliced lemon to all as garnish.

ETA: I usually just boil Yukon Gold potatoes and chunks of carrots to go with.

David Lebovitz’ Caponata. One time I tried roasting, instead of frying, the cubes of eggplant … not half as good, frying is necessary.

I use dried currants instead of raisins, keeps well in fridge for several days.

Also, Willy’s Crisp with vanilla ice cream.

ATK Carrot Cake (Doubled, recommended doing double from Arctic Shark … great idea.)

Believe it or not, this cake is not difficult, is very impressive, not too sweet … in my book, just perfect.

It looks very impressive for sure! And the cute guy presenting it doesn’t hurt, either

I don’t know which recipe I follow, but it mos def involves frying. I tried the oven-roasting method some time, and it doesn’t compare. Messy, and the recipe is kind of involved, but so worth it!

No Paper Plates! Break out the good stuff; the pretty stuff! After all that work, I agree! It’s like a beautiful frame for a beautiful painting.

He is so sweet, personable. Very rare kind of divorce.
