It didn’t seem as over the top in this one, TBH. Or maybe the plot just did a better job of distracting from it, since it’s the only thing I remember from the first two ![]()
We watched Weapons last night (on HBO). We’re really not horror people but we do like to have seen as many Oscar nominated movies as we can. The horror builds slowly in this film. When it comes it’s pretty ‘horror-y’ but there isn’t that much of it so we were OK. Julia Garner is a favorite and we do like Josh Brolin, so that helped. Pretty good flick. Reminded me a bit of Get Out I think.
Thinking of watching Sinners tonight. If you’ve seen both, how would you compare the ‘horroryness’.
Do I need to watch the first 2 installments to enjoy it?
I would say you should absolutely not do that. They’re all separate who dunnits, but this one didn’t make me angry for the time wasted. It’s well over 2 hours long, but it doesn’t feel like it ![]()
Sinners is much bigger in scope and in effects terms. Lots of gore. Very action oriented. Weapons is smaller and is more tense/spooky than Sinners. They are both very much horror movies. Sinners does have the added bonus of some amazing music. Highly recommended.
I was a bit disappointed by Weapons, but I’m a hardcore horror fan and not easily pleased.
Sinners is just amazing. The cinematography, the music… but I did not find it scary by any means. Well, the real world racism it plays on, of course, but not as creepy as Get Out was for me.
I will def watch Sinners again.
We watched 3 episodes of This is going to hurt, a British medical dramedy that someone here recommended. Ben Wishaw looks perpetually tired & I’d like to feed that boy some sammiches.
So far, so good.
There was a quick mention of Casablanca in something we saw a couple of days ago, so we watched it last night. Hadn’t seen it in decades. No wonder it’s considered one of the best movies of all time!!!
I just finished watching the full season of Ponies on Peacock. It was pretty entertaining, although you will have to suspend a lot of disbelief in order to enjoy it. It had a nice 70’s soundtrack.
We started Shrinking last night.
It’s the first comedy I have enjoyed in a long time.
We are also waiting for Shetland’s Season 10, Episode 6.
Ilsa, I’m no good at being noble, but it doesn’t take much to see that the problems of three little people don’t amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you’ll understand that. Now, now. Here’s looking at you, kid.
i try to see it every year in a theatre (but it’s playing on TCM right now). when i saw it a few months ago (thank you, https://stanfordtheatre.org/ ), there were actually a lot of young kids in the audience (dragged there by their parents? ) . it was nice to see young and old get so choked up during La Marseillaise. it’s a perfect movie.
Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
Finished This Is Going To Hurt. I have to say I was blown away by just how unsupportive and unfriendly every single person in that hospital was. @medgirl is that your experience?
Obviously, the witticisms and criticisms are exaggerated for dramatic purpose, but… wow. I am in awe of anyone who chooses this profession where the motto seems to be “sink or swim.”
Think we’ll start with The Night Manager next, which I seem to recall has some fans among us? Or at least the first season did?
Thankfully things have changed quite a lot in recent years. I would have been around Shruti’s age when I was training in London in that era. I was so disappointed by how I was treated by my seniors I resolved never to treat my own junior colleagues so badly. I think most of my peers must have felt like this as the environment is much more supportive nowadays. I remember after a really difficult case where a baby died because of mistake made by a midwife - later when I was in a meeting with my supervisor he just laughed and informed me that the midwife involved had 'topped herself ’ and he just needed to know that I wasn’t going to do anything stupid like that.
OMG. So … really, not that far off from reality.
Yes, it accurately portrays the reality of that particular time (the early 2000s). I’m glad we’ve moved on and that kindness, civility and supportiveness are now emphasised in the health service. There are still lots of problems but not at that level.
Like your job isn’t stressful and challenging and exhausting enough already. Who needs attitude on top of that?
Glad things have improved. And thx again for all that you do!
3 epis into The Night Manager. I’m none too hep to Mr. David John Moore Cornwell’s œuvre, as spy novels aren’t my thang, but Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman are just so very watchable.
My PIC informs me that the lead, whom I’d heretofore never heard of, either, is being tossed around as a possible new Bond?
I just finished watching the entire season of Girl Taken on Paramount plus. It was pretty good but very difficult to watch. At least it had a somewhat happy ending.
