We rewatched Jaws last night, which I’ve seen a million times (literallly! j/k) & still discover new details. So well done. Just an excellent movie.
Followed by Nobody, which we’d only seen once & I’d naturally forgotten most of the plot — besides the legendary bus scene, that is — mostly bc a sequel is apparently on the horizon.
We figured movies we’d seen would be a better choice than something new (still need to watch Sinners) given our emotional state. Having a dear friend over to join us for the first flick was a good decision, too.
Yeah, we watched the Jaws 50th anniversary broadcast and before the movie started, we were joking about how cheesy we expected it to be. After it was done, though, we agreed that it withstood the test of time remarkably well. What we thought were the cheesy parts back in 1975 are still cheesy, but even the most of the wardrobe didn’t seem too dated.
We may well, too. Unless we want to leave the sad empty house and catch 28 Years Later at the theater, having successfully avoided any spoilers from @Lectroid and @Hunterwali so far…
Jaws is one of those movies where, in the old days of channel surfing, would merit stopping and watching the rest of the movie from wherever it was.
It’s truly a lightning-in-a-bottle event. If the shark had actually worked well, if Roy Schieder hadn’t improvised that “bigger boat” line, if Shaw hadn’t rewritten the USS Indianapolis speech… every little accident somehow turned into highlight after highlight. Plus you have John Williams’ indelible score. I still think it’s one of Spielberg’s best, a look at a young, ambitious director working his ass off to get everything right and succeeding beyond all expectations.
IKR? There’s also Jurassic World Rebirth. The trailer looked pretty terrible, but peeps are liking it.
I don’t need no stinkin’ hi-brow entertainment ATM, evidenced by my consideration of checking out the current season of Love Island — you can’t escape the hype, apparently (?).
I don’t watch any reality TV, but brain melt might not be the worst thing these days.
Yes. All of this. So many brilliant choices — the camera angles, the setup of scenes… and wasn’t Shaw completely blitzed for the drunk scene on the boat?
Other movies I have to finish when channel surfing are Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski, and Fargo. There are probz a few others, but these come to mind immediately.
If you’re looking for dumb fun, the 41st anniversary of This is Spinal Tap is playing for limited runs at various theaters (at least in the US). I’m going this afternoon.
Much like Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Young Frankenstein, Tap remains hysterically funny even when you have committed every line to memory.

Just finished High Potential, season 1. Fun, breezy, quirky in the way that Monk was. A similar type of procedural set up. Look forward to season 2. Kaitlin Olson is fun.
We tried to cheer ourselves up on Wed eve & watched a few more episodes of I literally just told you, a very funny British game show hosted by Jimmy Carr.
We finally got to watching Sinners tonight, which I found very engaging. But it was really three movies: “regular” horror, deep south horror, music. Stunning to look at and listen to, fantastic performances, but I found the narrative somewhat disjointed. Like, where did that white vampire guy come from? How come we never saw the native Americans again? Should we go a little deeper into the history of discrimination against the Irish, since the movie refers to it only glancingly? It was at once too long (for me) and not long enough.
