Would you share the German series you liked?
“Hotel Europa” for one.
I particularly like the international selections from Walter Presents.
Say it ain’t so! Yesterday was the season finale for The Righteous Gemstones — a season that couldn’t possibly have been more insane. I may have to rewatch from S1 just to get my Gemstone family fix till the next installment starts…
I, Jack Wright on BritBox.
Quite delicious so far, and a wonderful cast.
Aftermath of the death of a wealthy patriarch, and the surprises he left in his will.
The final night of the SMFF was Sunday. The first slot was the short film block. Most were quite good. Of particular note is a body-horror chef-themes tale called The Fermenting Woman, and a Black Mirror-like dystopians take about what could happen if you default on your student loans, called En Memoria
And then:
Chainsaws Were Singing (2024) - dir. Sander Maran
Maria and Tim are newly in love, but are separated by Killer, an unbalanced young man with a chainsaw.
This deeply silly and absurd horror comedy musical (yes, musical!!) gross out splatterfest comes to us from Estonia, and feels like the Eastern European equivalent of Parker and Stone’s Cannibal, the Musical, with a dash of John Waters and big chunk of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre thrown in for good measure. By way of example, an actual line from the film is “How can somone punch a face with a baby?!”
This is a film where psychotic killers burst into song, intestines fly, and things generally have the weight and seriousness of a Tex Avery cartoon.
3/5 Chainsaws up the butt. Yup. You read that right.
Finally, there was:
Queens of Drama (2024) - dir. Alexis Langlois
What we have here is the glittery, stylish musical comedy queer romance about two French singers, one who’s won a “Pop Idol” contest and is on her way to success, and her more butch girlfriend who tries to make it as a less glamorous punk singer.
All of which was getting off to an amusing and frenzied start, when my stomach decided to rebel. I was forced to abandon it 40 minutes in the two hour runtime.
What I DID see makes me want to go find it and finish it. It looks like a blast.
Thus ends the festival. A bummer way to finish, but I still had a great time
Hot Tub Time Machine. I thought this would be a fun, mindless way to spend an evening. It was sporadically amusing and nothing more. Lotta homo-panic, that’s for sure.
Sadly I read that this is series finale not just season finale. That was the last one? Seems a bit anti climactic although the episode was bonkers.
Edit: that wasn’t last episode thank goodness.
Whew! My heart about dropped when I read your first sentence.
Then I read your edit, and all was good with the world again
Watched Baby Girl last night, since it was finally available for free on Max.
We were pretty unimpressed with it all, and perhaps Ms. Kidman’s acting might be more convincing if she were able to move her face still. Glad we didn’t fork over money for this.
Two more epis of St. Denis Medical to cheer us up.
I’m way behind on this thread!
Starting this one
And this one
Wow, I’d love to see OBEX, having grown up in Baltimore and having gone through all the cicada eruptions.
I vividly remember the 1987 Cicadas. The 1970 ones were the first I was really aware of, because I was driving …
The Monkey was finally available for less $$$, so we watched it last night. Very entertaining.
Thanks to you and other HOs, we started watching The Righteous Gemstones. We’ve only watched season 1 so far because it’s on a streamer we don’t normally subscribe to. We look forward to catching up. What a wild ride!
Hope you enjoy it as much as the rest of us.
Wild ride, indeed, and i’ts only going to get crazier!
The latest episode was completely bonkers. So sad this is the last season.
Watched the latest episode of The Studio. Very funny episode on political correctness and how to navigate those choppy waters. Also rewatching Peep Show (very un pc) in honor of David Mitchell’s star turn in Ludwig.
That episode was very funny! And yeah, still bummed about TRG ending
Punch Drunk Love
I’d never seen this movie, which my husband really likes, so we watched it together yesterday evening. I guess it was made at a time when neurodiversity was not a well-developed concept and people like Barry Egan were considered ‘freaks’. Adam Sandler is always compelling and the movie is so weird it keeps you watching. I particularly liked Mary Lynn Rajskub as his sister.
Found it unexciting, unfortunately (3 episodes in). I literally thought of a Woody Allen scene at some point just to be reminded of what greatness looks like.
Oh, what a shame. Great cast.
