In honor of Gene Hackman’s passing — well, TBH we just wanted to watch a movie after dinner & my PIC went down the GH movies rabbit hole — we watched Runaway Jury last night, a 2003 flick about >drumroll< a trial
This one’s concerning a widow whose husband got mowed down by a recently fired employee (who naturally takes his own life after having killed as many former colleagues as possible) vs. The Gun Industry.
A lot of shady machinations coming from the defense (natch), with Gene Hackman as the ringleader, Dustin Hoffman as the widow’s attorney, and John Cusack and Rachel Weisz as one of the jurors and his GF with ulterior motives.
Enjoyable, albeit with a fairly predictable and — as we know now and presumably will for eternity — highly unrealistic ending.
Ah, what a coincidence, saw the same movie last week! Also because of Hackman’s passing. Enjoyable indeed. Last week I also saw Hoosiers again, about Hackman becoming a basketball coach in a small town. And then a while ago already I rewatched Mississippi Burning, which is the strongest of these three movies imho.
Binge watched Derry Girls awhile back. Highly recommend, very well written and performed. As a bonus to the hilarity and scariness, I was taught by Irish nuns (Sisters of Mercy) in grade school….all I can say is holy hell.
I’ve met both of those characters in real life. When I watched the first episode almost fell out of my chair when Sister Michael enters…scary real, the click of the heel and same order of nuns that taught me in grade school.
Uncle Colm was used brilliantly, especially when the girls called him to bail them out from the police. Also, extreme coup to get the special guest star in that scene. Wasn’t expecting it.
Indeed. My favorite scene that had me choking on laughter was when the widowed grandfather meets a potential love interest. His daughters interrogate him about how and where. He says at church and they continue pressing. His response was at stations of the cross….second time Jesus falls. Almost a throw away line but it slayed. You can tell the writers had a lot of fun.
took a look at the new crime drama Adolescence on netflix. knew nothing about it, other than Stephen Graham is a lead and i really like his work.
the episode unfolds in a single tracking shot sustained throughout the duration. the setup hits like a sledgehammer. everything unfolds in real time. the gimmick works in this case, enforcing instant intimacy with the excellent cast. i was immediately gripped and ultimately devastated. stellar work.
Watched all 4 episodes this week and it’s quite a ride. You think it’s going in one direction and then everything changes. Really loved it. I wouldn’t call it much of a comedy but there were a few laughs I guess. Great acting.
Currently on Ep 6 of The Pitt. It’s very good. Noah Wylie’s character Dr “Robbie” Robinovitch could easily be Dr Carter from ER 30 years later. There’s definitely gore so be forewarned. But it’s worth it.
Absolutely loved that series and Twenty Twelve with a lot of the same people. We were watching the Franchise (RIP) on Max and immediately picked out the kooky pr lady from both these shows.
