What are you watching? - 2025

She was the only person with a speck of goodness in her. Those teenage girls-I would have sent them home so fast…!

Oh, I meant the gay director of the first season… not the lesbian of the second. I thought almost every plot line in the second season was awful, including that one.

Oh yeah, the manager was great, I was thinking of the woman who worked in housekeeping, who I think is in this season also.

Rewatched the very good, very intense, slow burn that is Men with Jessie Buckley and Rory Kinnear with some of my lady posse. I’d forgotten a few things since I saw it when it first came out, especially just how insane the ending is.

Cannot recommend this enough, but — as per usual: not for the faint of heart

After my laddies left, my PIC and I watched the 50th SNL anniversary. We enjoyed it. Even Adam Sandler managed to not annoy TF outta me.

I loved Men, and I definitely wasn’t prepared for that ending. Then again, I wasn’t really prepared for the ending of The Substance either, and I loved that as well.

I remembered it was CRAY, but not the exact details :scream:

Compared to that I thought the ending of The Substance had a far more comedic subtext.

Captain America: Brave New World (2025) - dir. Julius Onah

Ok, at this point you’re either still clipping along with the Marvel Cinematic Universe or you’re not. And lord knows, this certainly won’t be the film that would tempt you back if you checked out somewhere around Endgame or shortly thereafter.

Now, as a Marvel movie, this is fine. Even a little better than average. Anthony Mackie has presence that, while maybe not at Chris Evan’s levels of charisma, make his Sam Wilson version of Capt. America a compelling, and different sort of hero than the Steve Rodgers version. Harrison Fiord is his best grumpy self as President Ross. On a nerd level, there are callbacks to The Eternals, finally closing the hanging thread of how the world reacted to a giant celestial being appearing in the Indian Ocean, and a teaser for the eventual coming of the X-Men, with the introduction of adamantium into the world (it’s what Wolverine’s claws are made of).

But,honestly, this film’s politics are just a mess. Now, all of this stuff has comic precedence that goes back DECADES, so it’s not like it was written with the current political reality in mind, but:

First we have a title change. The original title? Captain America: New World Order. You can only imagine what the conspiracy theory nuts would have done with that. (Mind you, the new one isn’t great either. Did anyone involved actually read Huxley?)

Then we have a president who is mostly known for his recklessness and stubbornness elected to office and LITERALLY, (as in ACTUALLY) turning into a red (deep orange?) rage monster because his desire for personal power made him easily manipulated by a villain MUCH smarter than him. We have him allowing a black man who was previously unjustly imprisoned by the feds take the blame for a crime he wasn’t responsible for. We have the president’s head of security being an Israeli character, who at the last minute got a name tweak to move her away from her comic counterpart, who is explicitly an ex-Mossad agent with a big Star of David on her costume.

Now, in this case, the president takes accountability for his actions, surrenders, resigns, and is imprisoned. There was damage, but buildings are repairable. Everything will probably be ok.

That’s how you can tell it’s just a movie.

sigh

Haven’t watched the whole thing, but favorites were Adam Sandler song, Kate McKinnon and Meryl Streep skit and Laraine Newman and Jane Curtin holding up a pic of Gilda at the end.

My PIC recorded the red carpet show. I’ll probably watch it with my afternoon coffee

Kate McKinnon and Meryl Streep were a riot. You could tell they were both trying their hardest to make the dudes break.

Me too. Almost spat out my tea at “Gulf of Steve Martin”.

“I can’t believe it’s been on so long, and I’m just talking about tonight!” - Colin Jost…I think. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Oh, and Eddie Murphy as Tracy Morgan was pretty fantastic, too.

The intro number, tho… Paul Simon could barely stay in key, which isn’t uncommon at that age — but Sabrina Carpenter had no such excuse :face_with_open_eyes_and_hand_over_mouth:

The less said about Miley Cyrus, the better. Good thing the Purple One is no longer among us, although I thought Brittany Howard (whom I’d never heard of but I’m old) did a good job.

I didn’t watch the whole thing but I caught some of it on YouTube. Eddie Murphy’s Tracy Morgan was aces and even more hilarious he was stood right next to Tracy Morgan.

And the alien abduction sketch: it’s fun to see how fresh they can keep a returning bit

I miss Kate McKinnon. It was also nice to see Cecily Strong reprise her “Girl You Wish You Hadn’t Started a Conversation With,” another classic skit.

We watched Flow yesterday. A captivating story about a ragtag team of random animals navigating a flood. Absolutely stunning animation.

Not just for cat lovers. Watch this!

First episode of White Lotus was already more entertaining than the last season’s.

More loathsome rich people I look forward to despising. Oh, and the bonus of Walton Goggins, Posey Parker, and Aimee Lou Wood, whom I first couldn’t place until it clicked: she played the lovable rich ditz in Sex Education.

Yeah, the loathsome rich people part isn’t clicking with me. I loved the succession loathsome group but White Lotus people especially the families are kind of gross. I’ll give it a look though. Love Goggins on Righteous Gemstones.

Just watched a clip of Tina and Amy taking questions from the audience and it was hilarious. Definitely some great moments on SNL 50 and some duds.
