I’ve actually been listening more to 90s music recently. A few weekends ago I was helping a friend moving, and we were listening to a 90s hits radio station. There were actually pretty good hit songs back then!

In the 90s I was studying at uni, and listened to 3 types of music: 1) house/dance music being played in clubs (like Masters at Work), 2) artsy things like Radiohead/REM/Nirvana, and then 3) the hits. Portishead would fall in that second category.

One interesting musical development in the 90s was breakbeat aka jungle. People like Roni Size, using jazz samples (like Portishead was doing) but then adding a break beat.

The most interesting songs of that style are still imho Everything But The Girl - who started out as a folksy 80s group but ventured into dance in the 90s.

This song hits all of those 3 styles: massive top 100 hit, massive in the dance clubs, and of course Tori Amos being the darling of the pop/indie crowd. I wish I could turn down the pitch though, Technics SL 1200 style…

I was not aware they had 5 good songs and couldn’t make it through the playlist but surely reasonable folks disagree?

They have some great songs though - imho their best of is basically their first album, and then a few (2-3) more.
