Dude could sing what a talent. The story of his death here in LA is a sad one and still unresolved to the satisfaction of many.

Well, now that NYD is over i’ll share my opinion on U2 that my U2 fanboy friend despises and probably rightly disagrees with, namely that they stopped making cool new music in the early 90s. Man that live at redrocks album is great and a classic (even tho only a few songs records at redrocks on it). Still, they’re a supergroup, I admire Bono (not enough to read his autobiography which my pal did love btw) and concede they had a ton of success since when I liked em last.

my favorite songs are party girl, sunday bloody sunday, i will follow and new years day. 40 and gloria are pretty cool too. I’m gonna laugh if discoteque gets played!

Our opinions aren’t that far apart.

I love their work up until The Joshua Tree, anything after that is pretty bland imho. I try to have an honest opinion: so, just because many find them - and Bono especially - very obnoxious and irritating, I still love what I love and hence post what I listen to.

I also try to distinguish between them being one of my favourite bands in my youth (so emotional reasons) versus just objectively listening to good music.

And hence while their album The Unforgettable Fire has a lot of emotional value to me it is still one of the best albums from start to finish I have ever heard. With Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois as the producers very much responsible too.

Nice.

I think for me, I’m more of a straight up rock fan when in that genre and prefer my crooning elsewhere (or nowhere).

I love tapping into the emotion of my youth when listening to music! oh that magic feeling…

Somehow I’m still listening to a lot of 70s songs, courtesy of Spotify’s algorithm.

Yeah that’s a nice song…

They (and Paul’s) share this same darkish and full sound, like it’s coming from a tube amp. Always loved that sound. You can also hear it very well on Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, which still sounds like it could have been made yesterday. And it was also the sound Lenny Kravitz did on his first album.
