Fun article and that’s actually a good list! Completely forgot about Garbage!
Oh wow I didn’t know that! I’m a big sucker for good sound quality, though I’m not sure I want to buy cd’s again. Vinyl maybe. Are the other remixed albums worth the money?
Revolver and - strangely enough - Magical Mystery Tour are my favourites.
yeah i dont buy cd’s either…maybe there will be a vinyl set–i don’t buy remixed stuff but I’m interested in alternative versions of records…for example the alternate cuts from blood on the tracks are cool.
True that re alternate cuts. These two I prefer over the original. In fact, REMs Athens demos I just overall prefer over its original Fables of the Reconstruction (which is already my favourite).
Obvious omission…
the various rolling thunder tour (also for you @Sunshine842 ) bootleg recordings online are also a treasure trove for bob, some of his best stuff if you ask me
ill have to listen to your posts later when i can enjoy more!
I really like that version of Autopsy. Man what a talented band. Call me crazy but the first album without the awesome Sandy Denny and with Judy Dyble is pretty great too, maybe my favorite and that says a lot cuz the next few all the way up to leige and leif are all among my favorite 60s rock stuff.
REM, nice too
I like the story behind Nebraska where they liked the cassette tape Bruce made and wanted to make the album and he essentially told them no, that’s the damn album, it’s done!
We were talking about the Beach Boys - there’s a ton of unreleased stuff which is now available from the Smile sessions, some really excellent alternate versions there too…
Some live music in lalaland tonite…one of the music world’s biggest dicks (if you ask me) but also a supremely talented musician who puts on an excellent show… Roger Waters.
Well I’m getting in the mood with my favorite Canterbury bands…I’ll take Gong (and Caravan, Soft Machine and Hatfield and the North) over Pink Floyd any day of the week
Bonus points for being food adjacent and not just the mushrooms!
Well if anyone in LA tonite looking for something last minute, check out the probably soon to be renamed again crypto.com arena for the second roger waters show…no need to video any of the show with so much on youtube available…great sound coming in from all angles and felt at times like we were on the blade runner battlefields…anyways, political details aside I do admire Roger’s fight for the poor, minorities, women, trans/gay people and more - he’s still a warrior that can bring the heat.
or hit up the bowl tonite for this legend…
I was watching the Bee Gees documentary yesterday, very nice overview. I didn’t know they apparently were one of the first to create an artificial drum beat using reel to reel - for Night Fever. See pics.
Also interesting to see the backlash around disco at the time, which more or less forced them to become song writers for others, e.g. Barbra Streisand.
And then another one of my favourite soundtracks, besides Saturday Night Fever.
Very cool. Amazing that he did so many Bond movies too.
Yes, and then the Midnight Cowboy OST has a lot of these quirky 60s songs instead of big orchestrated scores, as well as the major hit Everybody’s Talking by Harry Nilsson (which I didn’t include in my post).
Something else.
I think these guys were among cobains favorites.
I saw this cool picture of Mick Ralphs’ guitar and amp the other day and it made me think of cobain too.
This is a tour that never happened. Some dispute between Ian faith and sir denis Eaton-Hogg lol. For me the mick ronson and Ian hunter combo is awesome. Talk about 2 underrated musicians.
But Sailor, ok…
Cool - I did not know that. I had heard though that Cobain was a big fan of REM, and that apparently their album ‘Automatic for the people’ was on repeat when he committed suicide.
Tragedy!
Something more light hearted…
Sad stuff.
I’m thinking about the sad recent news story of the British soldiers tortured by Russia with Abba on repeat (amongst other horrid stuff)
I’m so so on REM. Some really great songs. One of my pals is a REM and U2 super fan. I always tease about what I feel is their shitty last decade (or 3 for U2).
But I’m no hater
Wow, yeah nice song Party girl… Thing is, I grew up listening to U2 and R.E.M. Lived from album to album, and both have had great runs. Especially REM, with like 7 classic albums one after the other. But I also was a huge U2 fan, even paying 50 then Dutch guilders (like 20 euro) for a bootleg tape from a concert. Lousy sound quality of course lol.
But I can fully understand that for people that don’t have that emotional connection, there is less interest in these bands.
Now I mostly listen to their older albums. U2 had the brains to work with Brian Eno, so their album Unforgettable Fire is still one of my favourites of all time. But of the 80s bands these days I more often listen to for example Talk Talk, Prefab Sprout, and then I love the Simple Minds album New Gold Dream.
Yeah my U2 fanboy friend - well that’s not nice lol - is also a big fan. I wasn’t aware of much except don’t you forget about me.
He loves this “synth classic,” with some allegedly danceable songs and some groovy bass and also some experimental stuff (2 songs have guest keyboard solos by herbie hancock himself). Can’t argue with Herbie ever. Maybe you guys are onto something.
