The shortest month is also cold if you’re in most of the northern hemisphere. What are you heating up your oven for?
Sunday dessert will be rice pudding - pure comfort on a forecasted cold and snowy day. I use the recipe from Better Homes and Gardens 1976 cookbook.
Brazilian Style Chocolate Glazed Carrot cake. This is a very moist dense cake. Carrots, eggs, cream of coconut, white sugar, and oil are placed in a blender and blended till smooth, and this is then to mixed with the dry ingredients. We enjoyed it but there was no distinctive flavour coming thru. Certainly wont take the place of my favourite cake from Dessert Person but just saying is Brazilians is impressive. Recipe from Milk Street Bakes
Its my husbands birthday so I also baked these buns for breakfast tomorrow morning. Recipe for the dough is Yeasted Buns from The Sweet Polish Kitchen. I love this recipe. They are filled with pistachio butter cream, sprinkled with pistachios and crumb topping. They feel very light. Breakfast
Sunshine and I were watching the “Jaime Oliver” channel on ROKU, when he made a yorkshire pudding. She commented on how much she loved yorkshire pudding but thought it was more of a restaurant specialty item.
After a quick search on youtube, I found a “Preppy Kitchen” video and recipe. I made a “half batch” as a test. They were fairly easy to make.
Sunshine told me she loves Yorkshire pudding with melted butter for breakfast, so she’ll have that tomorrow with her morning coffee.
My mother made Yorkshire pudding to go with roast beef fairly often, but I rarely see it at restaurants, so I have the opposite feeling about them. They’re delicious. Good job!
I see that Dessert Person is $5.99 on Kindle now.
This cake (the Brazilian style you picture here) appeals to me – I imagine the texture must be like almost a sturdy pumpkin mousse ?
Yes very moist
I’ve never seen it either, but Sunshine remembered it from many, many years ago when she lived in New York (Manhattan area).
I imagine this restaurant used some type of beef fat or beef drippings for their Yorkshire Pudding, as it was served with her steak.
My gosh these look and sound good.
It is delicious. I was wondering what would happen to the pastry cream on the buns while they were baking but it stayed nice and creamy. I had a jar of pistachio paste for awhile and wanted to start using it up.
It’s a favorite part of a meal at House of Prime Rib in SF, very hard to get a reservation there now.
I once had popovers, served fresh and warm, at The Rotunda Restaurant of Neiman Marcus, served with strawberry butter (I prefer with jam or honey.
I also had popovers at the casual restaurant at the Cliff House, served hot as soon as you sat down. The whole Cliff House has been closed for a good while but is scheduled to reopen, I don’t know what will go in there.
Tyler Florence serves them at his Wayfare Tavern, I’ve never been.
Sadly, I never had any home cooked ones.
It’s been fun experimenting, learning how to make good ones.
I baked a German chocolate cake with ATK’s frosting and brought it to a dinner party. I was chasing a taste memory of a homemade German chocolate cake I had at a sleepover in 7th grade – not too chocolatey, with buttermilk or sour cream in the batter. I attempted to get there repurposing my red velvet cake recipe minus the food coloring plus an extra Tbsp. cocoa. It could have used more chocolate but had a lovely soft, fluffy texture. I found the frosting a little runny but good. Everyone seemed to like the combination and I left them with slices for breakfast.
I froze the rest; don’t need that temptation!
ETA: I split one round and froze the second, which was plenty.
Stressful news day today so… I baked.
This recipe: https://www.hersheyland.com/recipes/sea-salt-caramel-chip-chocolate-cookies.html with TJs’s salted caramel chips.
Still a favourite: will take in to work tomorrow.
I love those cookies. And … we’re sorry.
Cinnamon rolls
love how warm and cozy the house feels with that smell on a cold day.
Glad you joined the conversation, @lunaquinn . Do you have a favorite recipe? My favorite involves a bread machine for dough mixing/rising. And the last time I made them (Dec 2023), my bread machine quit mid-stream. I finished the process without, but haven’t yet gone back to making cinnamon rolls with the replacement bread machine. That may be a good project sometime this week while it’s snowing.
I saved the sweet potato juice from last night’s dinner. I combined it with some apples from the freezer (shredded), brown sugar and cinnamon to make this Sweet Potato Apple Cake.
I was attempting to make a vanilla butter cream frosting for it, but ran out of clear vanilla. When I used the brownish vanilla I had in stock – the frosting looked horrible – an ugly shade of beige/brown. Enter some green food coloring and my cake looks fun vs. blech.
Sunshine will have a choice this morning with her coffee – leftover Yorkshire Pudding with butter and raspberry preserves or “breakfast” Apple Cake. (LOL)
Spotted at a used book store, almost bought it to send it to @Desert-Dan .
That is so Cool!!
For the record, Sunshine loves my experimental Apple Cake, she had a small piece after lunch. I tried a bite and it was both tasty and moist – really good!
WIN!!
