I’m not a rum drinker, so can’t answer your question. Will share what I used, which was a decent bourbon:
I love bourbon, just hoping not to buy a bottle before the end of dry January. I don’t need that temptation

I think it absolutely would work. Just be a slightly different taste, but run and chocolate are also good together (just not AS good, in my mind).

I once ran out of rum for a chocolate cake, so I used brandy instead. It was not as good.
