[West Oakland] Horn Barbecue

Unfortunately this doesn’t surprise me at all. The brisket is always fantastic but everything else I’ve had has been wildly inconsistent and the wings I had at Kowbird were greasy half were spiced and half weren’t, making it clear the staff isn’t trained properly. I think he expanded too rapidly to keep up quality control. I hope this is a wake up call though because we are lucky to have such quality brisket in the Bay Area and I really want him to succeed.

On 8th St, near Broadway in Oakland next to the old Trappist, there’s a new owner/alcohol notice for Matty’s Burger, aka Matt Horn. It’s been up for a while. Was looking forward to seeing it open…but perhaps not so soon. Hopefully he can keep the flagship BBQ joint going.

Went again a couple weeks ago right when they opened at 11:00. Small
Line but moved really slowly. Brisket was exemplary and ribs were really good this time though not much smoke flavor. Pricey, 1 lb brisket and 1/2 lb ribs (2 ribs) were $80 all in with tax and tip.

So Horn BBQ is back after the fire/closure of the original location. They moved into the Matty’s Old Fashioned space in the Old Oakland area. Brisket is still excellent, very rich, smokey and peppery, and the ribs were very good. The brisket sandwich seems like it was made from the burnt ends and had just the right amount of sauce with thinly sliced onions and excellent pickles on the side. Definitely more restaurant operation now, they obviously aren’t smoking the meats on site. Glad they are back.

Couple of quibbles. When you go to the website the first thing that pops up is a spend $75 and get $25 off if you sign up and pay through the Inkind app. So I set up the whole app, payment, etc., but when I asked about using it the counterperson mumbles something about not being able to use it because of technical issues. It was clearly BS, she couldn’t really even say it with a straight face. Second, it took 40 minutes for them to prepare a takeout order in a half full restaurant. Since it isn’t like the old place they didn’t ask how I wanted my brisket, but gave a couple slices of lean and one fatty. Brisket is still awesome though.

Are those prices for real?

They look reasonable for the Bay area

Very reasonable.

Prices look fine for the Bay Area. For comparison, the prices at Franklin in Austin Tx. I haven’t tried Horn so can’t compare it to the highly regarded Franklin, but the prices are in the same ballpark at least.

Yes indeed, I think I’ve gotten so used to Bay Area pricing that I only notice if something seems too cheap!

They actually dropped their prices from a year ago (photo from Yelp)

What is considered a serving for one person, half a pound? That does seem a tad high for a fast casual take-out but for a sit down place, that’s reasonable. Also new construction.

Thanks for the tip on that $25 off app.

Two of us got the brisket sandwich, half pound brisket (3 slices), half pound ribs (2 big ribs) and collards. $60 after tax/before tip. Took home a rib, 2 slices of brisket and collards. So I’d say a half pound per person is plenty, especially if you get a side or two.
