Thank you!

Watermelon and Feta Salad is also another tasty option when the tomatoes available aren’t good ones.

I have been impressed that whatever watermelon is being imported lately has been almost as sweet as local watermelons during the summer. I don’t buy it too often, out of season, but it sometimes hits the spot.

I’m making Greek lentils ( fakkes), tonight, March 31st. It’s a traditional meal during Lent. Greek Lent runs another 10 days, as Eastern Easter will be on April 12th this year.

I haven’t made Greek lentils this year because one third of my household is on a lower fiber diet right now, and the other third has stopped liking lentils. I’ll make a small batch.

Leftover borscht from Alla’s Pierogi in Strathroy, ON, asparagus from Mexico, Greek lentils, and roast chicken tonight.

Wow, Boston area we don’t get local tomatoes until early August at the earliest and local peppers after that. It needs to warm up a lot for a while to get the peppers ripe here. Who knows what it will be like this summer after such a cold winter. The good news is that the local tomatoes and peppers last until end of September or even early October often.

In Ontario and Quebec, the local tomatoes, which taste pretty good, that are available from now to July are either hot house tomatoes, or started covered with some heating, then exposed to sunlight and other weather in June. We have strawberries grown in these conditions, as well.

Our growing season in southern Ontario and Quebec is pretty much the same as Boston’s.

We have a lot of modern hot houses.

We typically will have a few days with frost until June 1st, so it isn’t possible to grow field tomatoes without some cover or some other help before then.
