Weekly Menu Planning - July 2025

Curious to see what you think about the shrimp recipe. I was disappointed, but perhaps my tastebuds’ memory of Jenny’s amazing spicy garlic shrimp was still too vivid. One would hope there are better recipes out there.

Garlic shrimp any which way sounds great! You’ve inspired me to put some version thereof onto my plan for coming days.

Hi everyone!

It’s been a busy couple of weeks of travel here. Last week was full of good eats in Hong Kong with my friends (in insanely hot and humid weather).

Some of what we ate:
– Sichuan feast upon landing (including fabulous jumbo shrimp with sichuan peppercorns and aromatics, and several delicious cold salads of which I really loved the lotus root)
– Barbecue night at home – three cuts of steak, sausages, Indian-marinated chicken kababs, shrimp, mac & cheese, slaw, and more
– Exquisite Cantonese banquet dinner for my friend’s birthday (including Peking duck, Iberico pork char siu, lobster har gow, smoked black cod, and much, much more)
– Festive Indian food at home – Puri Bhaji, butter chicken, lamb rogan josh, naan, assorted Indian sweets I carried with me
– Thai takeout from my hosts’ favorite spot – pad see ew, crab fried rice, wagyu over rice, pork jowl, pork larb, morning glory
– A veritable feast at a divey local place (dim sum, clay pot rice, crisp salt & pepper seafood, more) – my favorite meal, but I ate a bad morsel of something and this killed my last 2 days :scream:

Hope everyone is staying cool, and enjoying the summer!

Yes to garlicky shrimp! Another one version I’m considering is scampi. I’ve made this one before - it’s good and very simple (gift link):

Speaking of scampi, this one is very nice for the season (also a gift link).

This one is really good too, kind of a spicy take on scampi:

They might still have them around the winter holidays. That’s when I recall last seeing them.

Hi everyone, hope you’re all well. Very little cooking this week. We had a great time in DC last week, a week long anniversary celebration, lots of great meals out. Got to see De Minaur play Mouton, and a little of the Shelton v. Davidovitch-Fokina match. I love tennis, and this was really fun. Lulu got home on Monday morning and then flew out Tuesday morning to go visit her boyfriend. She’s flying back Sunday night, and I sure do hope all goes well with her flight, because she and I are flying out on Monday morning for our mother daughter summer trip. Not thrilled with her decision here, but keeping my mouth shut (if you’re reading this Lulu, just be glad I stayed calm). Not a lot of cooking this week, but here is what we ate:

Mon: larb, rice, Asian slaw

Tues: mushroom cacciatore over mezza rigatoni (COTM, Julia Turshen). Easy, tasty, vegan - useful to have a couple of those kind of recipes.

Wed: carry out

Thurs: chicken and kimchi rice with cheddar and a fried egg on top. More Julia Turshen, not as big a fan of this one.

Fri: date night, crab legs!

Sat: looks like another date night, fancy pizza place

After a month plus of weather mostly in the 90s, today it is in the low 70s. Still wet out though. Have a great week!

We moved here

ETA: Never mind — just saw you were reporting on last week.

All sounds lovely!

Your close-out of July sounds delicious!

I want the larb, and I think my mom would like the cacciatore so I’m making a note. I get tempted to add cheese so some of those recipes, but often they really don’t need any!

Need to review my long list of Turshen COTM bookmarks, there were so many things I was excited about!

And – you deserve a MEDAL for staying calm . Hope all goes smoothly and you have a wonderful trip!

Go for the cheese! We had it on the side, but I know my oldest girlfriend, who is vegan, would love to have this as is.

I am hoping for the best. And happy that I meditate!

As am I, at the moment, even if it is with the help of an app and not always 100% successful

I get the Lulu surprise (!) and agree with Saregama for the mom medal!.. where you are two headed for your summer trip? Any interesting food possibilities? The DC trip sounds fabulous.

Thanks Madrid. I’m not sure she’d agree, but I will keep these kind words in mind. We’re going to Sicily! Lots of amazing food.

Wow! Please report back! I think I remember you’ve been to Sicily before.

Can’t wait to see your report. Where in Sicily are you headed again? Ortigia IIRC?

Yes! A couple nights in Taormina, a few in Ortigia, and one in Catania. Relatively short trip. I hope to do a report.
