Cooking for 3 adults in SW France

Summer is in full swing, loving the abundance in the farmers markets… EATING alot !

Some things we’ve enjoyed this past week:

Lamb meatballs in spicy tomato sauce (needed to use up my last jar of home canned before its time to make this year’s batch)

To celebrate the arrival of peach season… a simple dinner of Peach - serrano ham - tomato - buffalo mozza salad with a “pan con tomate” on the side.

Leftover lamb meatballs were turned into a delicious indian dish served with dal and an eggplant dish.

My favourite Courgette fritters after years of trying so many

Once more recycled leftover Lamb curry with a Zucchini Poriyal

Braised green beans in the Solar Oven With a yummy Beetroot leaf Borani on the side

Our greatest summer pleasure is a BO BUN once the cukes are in season. This dish is all over France, almost like the next sushi. I do believe that the recipe our family has been making is one of the yummiest.

Discovered the simple recipe of Niku Miso that will surely be put on rotation.

Tomorrow is a birthday dinner for my step-daughter and I’m trying to copy a delicious dessert I tried at one of my favourite spots in San Sebastian ! Ganache topped with very good olive oil, flaky salt and chili flakes. I’ve made the ganache (my first ) and will report back on how it goes !

We had it in Copenhagen (of all places) for the first time, at a neat lil food truck market.

Hi everyone

I’m back in the land of no planning (yay for fam! and also aaargh for meal by meal “what shall we eat?” torture :joy:), so reporting actuals. It’s mid-monsoon in Mumbai, but the weather gods have been kind to me and held off on any heavy rain the past few days – hope that holds another couple of days!

Will be off for a week to celebrate my friend’s big birthday in Hong Kong (redux of last year’s trip for his wife’s birthday, whatcha gonna do when you can’t play favorites :joy:) – I actually do have a decent plan already for many of those meals . Not looking forward to more packing & unpacking so soon, though I am excited about my trip.

Eaten of late & on the cards for the next few days :
– Mom’s pan roast chicken with chicken fat rice and roast potatoes + carrot salad (I made spinach raviolini in a light pesto cream sauce for mom)
– My favorite mutton (goat) biryani – 'nuff said (mock meat biryani for mom that was pretty excellent also)
– Mutton breast / ribs as a korma (made by mom before I arrived) + chapatis + rice + salad veg
– Chicken xacuti (a konkani / goan toasted coconut gravy that’s in my top 3, also made by mom in advance) + veg xacuti for mom + chapatis + rice
– Tea sandwiches with smoked salmon, ham, and cheddar + butter lettuce and avocado salad with champagne vinaigrette
A Simple Lasagna from COTM Turshen (swapping creme fraiche for something – maybe blended fresh ricotta / paneer with thick, drained yogurt) + salad + homemade garlic bread or focaccia
– Fam favorite kababs + naan + salad (fresh paneer or veg seekh kababs for mom)
– Assorted momos (chicken, masala mutton, vegetable and paneer)

I will try to bake a little cake and maybe focaccia or a small boule for mom before I leave for Hong Kong.

Have a wonderful week!

Love both of these! (Beetroot leaves are not always easy for me to find in the US or in India, but I love the flavor and texture both.) And I love reading about your solar oven use!

Hi, everyone. We’re back from vacation in NH - lots of relaxing (reading, jigsaw puzzle) and exploring (a few hikes with the dog, multiple mini golf courses), and some thrills doing a zip line tour at a ski resort (definitely the highlight of the trip; the views were amazing and as a non-skier, this is the only way I’d ever be at the top of a double black diamond run).

Our meals were largely unimpressive, ranging from okay to barely edible. One night we ate at a restaurant right on the water… only to get absolutely soaked in a sudden downpour! Fortunately, the house we rented had a very well equipped kitchen and so I was able to cook a few better meals.

Now we’re back home and trying to gear up for the coming week.

Lunches for the week: a sort-of-chopped salad with roasted peppers, artichoke hearts, chickpeas, zucchini, cucumber, and some red lentil penne, with Italian vinaigrette dressing. I made a ton so I hope either DH eats some or it’s so delicious I won’t get sick of it by the end of the week!

Sun: baked fish and chips (NYT), salad

Mon: halloumi with white beans and tomatoes (NYT), maybe some garlic bread on the side

Tues: gochujang meatballs, snow peas, rice

Weds: chicken tinga tostadas (NYT), pepper strips

Thurs: pork/pepper stir fry (this but with pork instead of beef)

We’re professional nerds. My husband is a sci-fi/fantasy author, mostly children’s books nowadays. In addition to being a community college STEM professor, I’m also a local science communicator, and I do a lot of events on the intersection of science and pop culture. Keeps us busy.

I have made them from scratch occasionally (first few times from a cookbook of the month), but I like the frozen ones available here (ditto a few types of frozen dumplings in nyc), so usually buy not make.

I’m lucky that they’re so easily available in good form in both places!
