First off, a huge thank you to all who chimed in on dining options. We barely scratched the surface but hope to be back again soon.
We got in on Friday and ate at George Restaurant.
The good: Professional and attentive service and a generally very pleasant atmosphere. There is a prix fixe and an à la carte menu, both with vegetarian options.
The not-so-good: While we were both impressed with the preparation of the individual ingredients, nothing ever came together as a dish and everything was too sweet. For example, the avocado brulée had all sorts of odd surprises, such as bits of grapefruit rind and something that looked like a roasted potato but was actually pear. I can cite several similar examples but will spare you. In brief, a meal I won’t soon forget because it was so odd, but ultimately this was not a successful outing for us.
Saturday:
Lunch at Khao San Road. Excellent all around. We got the squash as instructed and did not regret it, and then I had a delightfully spicy serving of fish-free pad see ew. Portions are huge so don’t make the mistake we did of planning an early dinner after lunch here.
Saturday evening:
Dinner at Soos. We were still pretty full from lunch so didn’t go too crazy. The dishes were a little overcooked but it was a busy Saturday night so I’ll cut them some slack. I wouldn’t necessarily make a special trip, but it was a sweet little place with a neighborhood vibe.
Then over to the Danforth to see Beta Band. I mention this because I tried a Nutrl for the first time - a canned cherry vodka cocktail that wasn’t at all sweet. A good find (and a great show!)
Sunday morning:
Walked over to Brodflour. The line was huge, but worth the wait. We tried several things: a cardamom knot, a jerusalem bagel, a slice of green olive focaccia, and a pear danish. All totally delicious and all worth the trip.
Sunday late lunch:
La Cubana. I couldn’t resist the margarita and I made the right choice. Then, of course, the vegetarian sandwich. A very enjoyable casual meal.
Then I stopped at Forno to get a grilled vegetable sandwich for the ride home, along with a slice of apricot cake. An excellent recommendation. A million times better than the VIA Rail offerings.
