Weekend eats [Warren RI; Barrington RI]

Headed down to Rhode Island ato see the parental units. Before I left, I did a big-ass haul from H Mart. On the way down on Friday, we stopped for a late lunch at Union Straw in Foxboro, a place we’ve been to at least twice before. We thought it would be a relatively quick stop (well, maybe not as quick as Burger King or Wendy’s that Spring Onion requested) but a local college had graduation so it was busier than expected. Food was decent—the lobster bisque I wanted was out so I got a caprese flatbread, SO had the mac and cheese, and B had a salmon burger. Nothing exciting, but I report and I took the photos in portrait mode to make them look fancy.

There were some perishables in the HMart haul, so we had dinner of rando stuff (gimbap [Korean seaweed rolls] , japchae, supplemented with a Blount Soup (kale and chorico) at our place.

Saturday I picked up my usual sourdough bread/bagel order from 7 Kings and in the afternoon, stopped by the jewel box of a shop, Prica Farina. Italian food labels are swoon-worthy.

Got some fun wines as usual from Grapes and Grains. This is definitely the best shop in town. Didn’t stop into Rind—the best cheese shop in town—next door this time.

Saturday was a Korean feast of really excellent kimchee from HMart (the in-house one from the NJ mothership, I think), dduk guk (rice cake soup; SO requested it). This was the first time my parents hosted us at their new condo; I think they need to do this more often, if only to keep them engaged and active.

We just had lunch at Blount clam shack for the first time this season. They’re not running on all cylinders yet, but a fun meal nevertheless. Giant lobster roll (B), New Bedford scallop roll (me), 2 fish and chips (haddock; SO and my dad; SO says he prefers cod so he’s got a more discerning palette than I do), Jonah crab salad roll (mom). Good Manhattan and RI clam chowder and cole slaw, as always.

Dang, now I’m starving and irrationally craving clam chowder.

Union Straw will always hold a special place in my heart. It was a mealtime lifesaver for my sister and me when Mom was beginning to fail in hospice at The Doolittle Home across the street and we were trading off sleeping in her room (she had been moving into the nursing wing). We could go across the street for a good meal and be back to her bedside in a short period of time. I loved their arugula, proscuitto, and balsamic flatbread pizza and their candied pork belly.

They also hosted her Celebration of Life in the back room for our family members and some of Mom’s favorites among the Doolittle’s staff.

@LindaWhit I think I recall this. In my universe, a comfortable place is more important than an exciting one.
