Long weekend trip cut short due to the snow (which of course got downgraded as we were kinda in transit).
Friday we had dinner with my parents. We chose Crossroads in Warren, which is a comfortable place for us all. We got an early table in the cozy (and dark, as you can tell) lounge, where there is a gas fireplace. Starters of clam chowder or simple salad included with adult meals. Steak tips for dad, shrimp scampi for mom, chicken tenders for Spring Onion, salmon pesto for B, linguine and white clam sauce for me (nice and garlicky). Everyone was sated. I wouldâve asked for crushed red pepper but they were slammed by the time we got our food (Rhode Islanders eat early).
We attended a cool MLK event at the neighborhood community center. They even had 2 food trucks giving out free food - Incredibowl, which I think was out of food by the time we showed upâŚthey have a brick and mortar in East PVD and Cultro. They had only steak tacos (B said they were excellent) and chicken + cheese empanadas left. Spring Onion reported that the empanadas were equally excellent; B and a friend of ours had some and confirmed. I took a bite, eating around the chicken - flaky pastry, not greasy at all. Forgot to take food photos but the lighting was yucky anyway.
Yesterday, we left RI a day early to get ahead of the âstormâ but we still wanted to do something fun. So, I proposed Level 99 which turned out to be a lot of fun for all 3 of us. Mental and physical challenges, escape room-esque. We had lunch right afterwards at the Nightshift location inside the venue. Iâve felt quite meh about the food at the Lovejoy Wharf location but we thought the food was much better in PVD. Mac and cheese for Spring Onion (our least favorite thing for him to order out - $9 for that?! but sometimes, you gotta just accept it and move on), piri piri chicken sandwich for B (lots of mmmâs from him whilst eating), and the caprese Detroit-style pizza for me (knowing weâd take it home for a snow âstormâ snack). Iâm no Detroit pizza aficionado, but this was good and much better than the specimen I had at the Boston spot. (Our favorite Detroit pizza in Greater Boston, thus far, is at Avenue in Ball Sq.) Nice crust, a little too thick and bready, though. Delightful melty burrata. I could only manage 2.5 squares, B polished off the rest for dinner.
On Friday, I was planning on going to HMart to get dduk (rice cake) so we could have an early Lunar New Year meal of dduk guk (rice cake soup) this weekend. Then, after school drop-off, this truck magically appeared in front of me as I was heading home, on its way to HMart to drop off dduk. I came so close to flagging down the driver and slipping him a $20 for a bag of dduk to save me a trip to HMart (I didnât have time so weâll have to delay Lunar New Year meal).
And we did not stock up on bread, milk, and eggs as is customary in New England for the impending storm, but I did make French toast for the first time yesterday for Spring Onion because I coincidentally had nice cinnamon swirl bread from Bread Obsession, milk, and eggs. He liked it!
Two other options for Detroit pizza, though theyâre not as close to you: Square Mfg in Natick is pretty good, though itâs pricey and thereâs no dine-in seating. Weâve also really, really liked Citizen Crust in Foxboro - itâs at the stadium complex so plan accordingly. In fact, we were planning to go to CC today but the snow derailed our plans.
This doesnât merit a new post so I decided to just hitch a ride on a previous post. Another weekend spent in Rhode Island helping out my parents and just hanging out. On Friday, we checked out East Bay Oyster Bar for their happy hour deal which is half-off for select apps, raw bar, and flatbreads before 6 pm. The three of us had done this some time ago, but this is the first time we took my parents. We all enjoyed it although itâs certainly not life-changing food. We started with a dozen oystersâ4 different varieties, all delicious and well-shucked (no shells, full of liquor). The usual mignonette and horseradish-y cocktail sauce. Spring Onion got the fish and chips, the other adults got 3 different types of chicken wings (very lacquered, no complaints from them), raw tuna wonton thing-ys (nice light bites, not as 1990âs as we were expecting), just ok calamari.
Saturday dinner was takeout from Nacho Mammaâs again which has become our go-to for Mexican. Quesadillas for me and SO, half-rack of pork ribs for dad, margarita salmon for B, and a Mediterranean salmon bowl for mom. No photos, too hungry.
Spent 4 hours at Level99 at the Providence Mall and had lunch at the Nightshift inside. Again, the pizza was good (pepperoni for SO, some chicken variety for B) and I got a noodle app, which had toothsome noodles and agreeable saucing, but a small portion.
