Visiting Tokyo & Kyoto-Restaurant Suggestions

Hi, I will be in Tokyo for five nights and Kyoto for three nights in February. Would some of you be so kind as to recommend restaurants. I would prefer keeping the prices to no more than $200 per person. Thank you very much.

I was told by fellow ’ Nippon-phile ’ foodie friends that the use of ’ TABELOG ’ in choosing reliable restaurants is a MUST!! For my upcoming food crawl to Osaka, Kobe and Kyoto, I find this highly rated ’ local ’ guide most useful!
For the discriminating ones, try picking anything with a 3.50+ rating! In general, they should be all reliable and ’ very good '! Pick 3.80+ , if you want to play safe! Anything over 4.0 is excellent and most probably will require using pay concierge service like ’ Omakase.com ’ to secure reservations.

Perhaps if you were a little more specific in what you wanted, we would be able to give you useful recommendations. Japanese restaurants often specialize in a specific type of cuisine, such as sushi, kaiseki, tempura… etc.

Or perhaps you were looking for non-Japanese options?

When I travel I like to try food that I have no access to at home. To that extent, I suggest looking at the list of Japanese dishes on Wikipedia and decide which ones you’d like to try. And then I seek out those dishes.

For example, my favorite discovery was Himono (干物), dried fish. Despite the name, it is surprisingly juicy. It’s grilled to order, usually whole. You’ll probably have to find a place that specializes in it.
