For those of you who remember Candy from her Chowhound days (I don’t believe she ever joined here), she passed recently from a long and terrible illness.
Her brother’s obituary was shared in my WFD group, and I wanted to share it with you.
I waited until Christmas passed to post this memorial. My big sister, Candace Paige Koebrich-Grover succumbed to a long, wasting illness on Monday, 16 December 2024 - just a few weeks short of her 50th wedding anniversary. Scleroderma victims often pass within ten to fifteen years of onset. Candy toughed it out for decades. She was a tough girl, and she never let it get her down. She and Doug lived in Savannah, Georgia; so, sadly, we didn’t see each other often enough. We were last together this summer in Kansas City, for my niece Rachel’s oldest son’s wedding.
She was the first of Ken and Martha Koebrich’s children, and leaves me as the last. We lost Scott in 1973, and Lisa in 1993.
She had an extraordinary life. She was born in Douglas Arizona, and lived in Japan twice, Waco Texas, Albany Georgia, Plattsburgh New York, Latham New York, Bloomington Indiana, and finally, Savannah.
She loved Art History and Oriental cooking - I have a bookshelf full of birthday present Vietnamese cookbooks as an enduring legacy. She love her husband, Douglas Grover, only slightly more than her many standard poodles.
We are still coming to terms with her passing, but I expect we’ll have a memorial to honor her life this summer.
