I’ve never been to Veeraswamy but it’s the restaurant that sparked my interest in the cuisine. Back in the 60s, when I was in my mid teens, my much older cousin, David, used to travel to London on business. He would always have a meal there and would come back and tell me all about it. It was all very exotic - from the turbanned doorman to the difference of the food. But it would be maybe another 10 - 15 years before South Asian restaurants started to become commonplace. At first, you had to visit areas such as Manchester’s “curry mile” but then, in due course, pretty much every neighbourhood had its Anglicised curry house.

That’s a pity.
Been there a few times over the years, and the food was always good, classic canon not modern.
A friend of mine tells me it has held up well over the years despite the plethora of newer and fancier places.
Chutney Mary and Amaya are from the same team (CM was the first indian restaurant I visited in London).
