Sorry to say that we had not been to Troquet since they moved to South Street (something like 5 years ago?) We celebrated our niece’s graduation last night and re-discovered what we’d been missing. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu, and although the menu states the entire table must order the same menu (they also have a 7 course option), they graciously accomodated two pescatarians in our party by substituting the final savory course, a beautiful portion of Rohan duck breast, crispy skin but medium-rare flesh, with a lobster dish. Started off with an amuse of oyster topped with a generous portion of caviar, followed by a wonderfully smooth bluefish paté (I have yet to have a bad bluefish paté but this was easily the best I’ve had), then mussels, very tiny and tender, in an aromatic reduction with chorizo, and a perfectly al dente mushroom risotto. Following the duck/lobster course, a fine chocolate mousse accented with sea salt and cocoa nibs. I was the only one drinking wine with the meal, and they offered a pairing of very decent, though not terribly memorable selections. Quite reasonable at an average of $6 per half-glass pour. The pacing and portion sizes were perfect - we left sated but not stuffed. Very pleased to become requainted with Troquet - we’ll put them back in our rota.
That sounds like a perfect (and delicious!) celebratory dinner, thanks for the report!
We returned to celebrate the end of the semester for our Spring Onion (and her A- in physics!). Just a fabulous meal all around, but the cheese course was particularly noteworthy. We split two orders three ways so we could sample six cheeses. We’re especially fond of soft, ripe cheeses, of which they had several, but also a nice selection of firm cheeses, including an aged Comte (didn’t ask if it was from winter (silage) or summer (grass) milk, but I’m not sure my palate is refined enough to discern the difference.) One of my pet peeves with cheese courses is they frequently are stingy with bread - no such issue at Troquet! A lovely assortment of toasted brioche, fruit bread, and another.
