dunno about google images, I was naming places I have eaten them
also Txikito
Great to see you here!
Yesterday we drove from Laguardia to San Sebastián, stopping in Vittoria to look around. It was a beautiful drive despite the dreary and surprisingly chilly weather. We took the A2124 (thank you again @Maribel) and it was much nicer than being on a big highway. Vittoria has some beautiful buildings.
Then into San Sebastián. People are wearing coats, and guess who didn’t think to pack one? Luckily LLD did, along with warmer clothes (he’s heading to Glasgow after our trip), so I am the person walking around in an oversized puffer jacket. Our first stop was Gandarias.
I’m not seeing these as they upload, so they’re likely not in order. We had one thing with caramelized onion, peach, and a slice of duck breast, one with I think crab salad with a little roe on top, uni, t-bone, and a warmed goat cheese with a little balsamic and walnut on top (my favorite of the batch).
We walked around a bit, then had our dinner stop at LaCuchara de San Telmo. We stood at the bar (got there about 15 minutes early and were 3rd in line). It was a fantastic experience. I forgot to take a picture of the foie gras, but everything else is below.
Razor clams, peppers, steak, tuna with beans. A very good meal and fun too.
Lovely food & scenery pics. Glad you found a way to stay warm, too!
Oh, and I practically OD’d on razor clams when we were in Barcelona
Coats already. Oh boy. The Mrs wont be happy.
Love(d) La Cuchara de San Telmo
It’s wet and 62 F according to LLD right now, mid afternoon. We both have great doubts that it’s actually even that high. Everyone I am seeing right now, as we sit outside enjoying some wine, is wearing a warm jacket.
I’ll take a bit of rain and cooler temps if it means less crowds, how busy is it there rn?
Loving this ride!
I´d also take rain with less crowds.
Amazing that Cuchara de San Telmo has been on the tourist trail for at least 20 years, I´m guessing, and it´s still firing. I loved that place as well. The first time I ever had a tapa with foie gras…still remember that!
These landscapes make my heart sing even more than the food does (which is a lot), so I’m in a huge crescendo! I lived in Spain for two years many decades ago and the terrain in that area sang to me the most. I loved the fog, clouds and atmosphere on the ground. A cafe solo or cortado with brandy can help a lot. Thanks so much for posting.
It’s pretty busy.
Yesterday we walked from one spot to the next, and a fair amount of wine was consumed. I’m feeling it a little this morning, unfortunately. Our first spot was mostly just to get out of the rain and the place had a table and was cozy; it’s not on any best lists I’ve seen but we enjoyed it - Jose Mari Taberna.
Next stop Bar Tamboril. The egg and shrimp both overcooked for mytaste.
Back to Gandarias.
Didn’t notice the name of the next (and last, thank goodness) stop.
The sun is out and LLD has gone for a walk. We’ll be heading to Bilbao today.
The food is gorgeous but that last pic of the harbor is jaw dropping.
Other than the banderillas (?) I do not recognize any of the offerings at Jose Mari, but it looks like it would be a ton of fun to try them. And cozy/not heaving busy is good.
Drove from San Sebastián to Bilbao yesterday. What a gorgeous drive! Mountains and steep pastures, got to see cows. Bilbao has a very different feel from SS. Walked around, eating and drinking. First food stop was Sorginzulo, cod fritters, mushrooms with caramelized onion and blue cheese, something porky for LLD.
Next food stop was Rotterdam. Peppers stuffed with cod and an absolutely fantastic take on patatas bravas: thinly layered potatoes cut into bite sized squares and fried with a dollop of spicy mayo on top.
Nicely done! Some great plates!
I think the cod stuffed peppers look like they could be totally delicious. That is a sleeper of a dish.
The bridge with the buildings in the background is a very nice shot.
Those patatas bravas more closely resemble pommes pavé, and they look outstanding
Thank you ZivB. We’re eating very well and having a blast.
I’m enjoying your “live reporting” so thanks!
We’re headed to Bilbao and SS in April. Seems so far off now but…
