Trader Joe's Yea/Nay/Meh: 4th Quarter 2015 - Pumpkinvasion to New Year's

YEA? IF the current Sticky Toffee Pudding, a freezer item, is the same as they had a decade or so ago, and never since then, it is outstanding. I bought it today but won’t get to it for a month. If you like plum/Indian pudding or date nut bread, this is right up your alley - keep in mind that it’s a seasonal item so may not last long.

YEA - Glad to see that the Butterscotch Shortbread Wreath Cookies, in a tall red-plaid canister, are back again, as they had not appeared yet a couple of weeks ago.

Spent over $150 there today but will refrain from mentioning items I have yet to try, other than to say that their spiral sliced ham is always a resounding “YEA!!!” It is less salty than most, so I prefer it to Honeybaked even though it lacks the crisp exterior of the latter.

MEH - Sticky toffee CHEDDAR. Raisins, dates, toffee bits, cheese. Quite soft, I don’t taste the cheddar. It’ll probably be good melted on a ham sandwich.

NAY for the bacon-wrapped scallops. I suppose if I want to serve that kind of stuff, I’m better off using quality scallops and good bacon.

YAY for the curated oils - at least the lemon and rosemary oils, as I’ve not yet tried the chili oil.

YAY to the refrigerated, ready-to-roast porchetta. Wrapped in sliced bacon, at which authenticates may disdainfully sniff, but I have no problem with that. I let it sit at room temp for a few hours rather than their recommended 30 minutes, so it cooked quickly. Roasted on a rack for 25 min at 500F, then added chunked sweet potatoes and carrots to the drippings, lowered temp to 325F with the probe set for 145F. It probably took less than 30 min for the probe to sound - I removed and tented the meat while upping the heat to finish the vegetables. Deglazed the pan and made a sauce using apple, maple syrup, mustard, garlic, cream. The bacon was crisp, the meat juicy/tender, and there’s not too much herb stuffing.

Christmas Dinner had the family vegans devouring TJs Turkey-Less Oven Roast w/ Gravy. They shared the gravy with others at the table to use on servings of mashed potato. Big YAY on the roast, approvals all around for the gravy.

Vegan TIKKA MASALA for a breakfast meal this morning for DD #2. She pronounced it “Good. Very good.”

For the Californians, Straus yogurt may be no more at TJ’s. I didn’t see it and when I inquired, they said they were looking for a new vendor to ensure a more ‘stable supply’.
