Trader Joe's YEA/NAY/MEH, 2023 Edition

They are fresh. I know, I was surprised as well! Their b/s chicken thighs are OK, too, but not great.

Glad someone thinks I’m knowledgeable :joy::joy::joy::joy:

Those make zero sense to me.

It’s good to know, because I normally avert and speed by the TJ meat cooler. In the past, the TJ meat resembled the dreck in my local food co-op–like they had to offer some fresh, but their heart wasn’t really in it.

I hear you. I’m really not into their pre-cooked sausages, either. I also dislike the premarinated meat because it’s rubbery.

@grumpyspatient I’m pretty sure I saw those in the Seaport location yesterday. I don’t know how easy it is for you to get there.

I thought the shwarma-style thighs weren’t half bad if one were pressed for time/out of ideas for dinner, but I tend to marinate my own meats.

pretty easy on the t: red line to south station; silver line 1,2, or 3, one stop to courthouse; right on thomson place — tj’s is right there.

It was a bag pistachio nuts every year for my roomate from my mom and dad and an orange cake for my FIL from his mother according to my MIL.
It always seemed like the ‘telephone’ game was going on with that family.

Did anyone else pick up the Italian Black Summer Truffle Slices in Olive Oil a couple of weeks ago? I’m guessing there was maybe a case or two, and then done. I got a few just in case they were good, but haven’t cracked one open yet.

I didn’t realize people were meh about their fresh proteins. I’ve never had one of their frozen meats that I liked, but I regularly buy their fresh pork tenderloin and their shaved beef and think they are quite good. Their chicken is fine. I don’t like their hamburger.

While I was checking out the cheese case, another shopper enthusiastically recommended the Figgy Cheddar. I don’t know how long they’ve stocked it. I bought a wedge but haven’t opened it yet because I got my YEA favorite caramelized onion cheddar and that molds pretty fast, even unopened. So I try to have some daily before it is covered with mold.

I don’t know that people are meh about the meats having actually used them.

I use their organic chicken regularly. I used to buy the NZ grass fed strip (freezer) but then they stopped carrying it, and their organic beef offerings are slim so I skip them.

The organic ground meats (beef, turkey) are as expected. I’ve used the bone-in (natural not organic) chicken thighs when cooking for a crowd, and they’ve been good too (also, it’s hard to find skin-on bone-in thighs near me these days, so it’s nice they carry them).

I don’t buy much pork because of sourcing, but since they switched to mostly crate-free I’ll be looking now (once I run out of the stuff in my freezer from WF).

The fresh fish section hasn’t disappointed — just salmon and swordfish these days, but they used to carry sea scallops that were good, so I hope they’ll cycle back.

I buy their proteins, and mostly they’ve been very good. Never gotten any of the marinated stuff.

I used to get their organic ground beef all the time for burgers, but the recent package was off somehow. Texture and flavor weren’t the same.

I love their hot Italian sausages that really pack some heat, and have no complaints about any of their fresh meats - steaks, chicken, pork, salmon - you name it.

I had good luck with their rib eyes, the vacuum-packed ones. But the last few I got were stringy and tough.

Not a favorite cut here but I agree it is good. Better than the gross marinated ones Aldi sells.

Sounds great!

The woman who recommended the Figgy Cheddar says it keeps well and can be frozen, but I tried it anyway, and like it a lot. The Fearlesd Flyer said it is a limited opportunity. Leicester cheddar, with bits of fig that were soaked in a marinade whose flavor profile is similar to mulled wine. Should be good on a charcuterie platter or in a grilled cheese sandwich or Croque Madame.

Picked up the cacio e pepe ravs upon @LindaWhit’s rec - not that I need MOAR pasta in the house :grimacing:, plus these gorgeous lil things that may or may not be part of a hodge podge meal tonight. I shall report, unless someone’s already tried them.

I bought the shrimp pouches but have not tried. Please do report back! I’ve been debating about what to pair them with.
