Trader Joe's YEA/NAY/MEH, 2023 Edition

yay to Tj’s dark chocolate rondo with strawberry, raspberry, tart cherry sprinkled on top. They also have a milk chocolate one with nuts sprinkled on top. I prefer dark chocolate so only tried the one. I had thought it was a chocolate covered cookie but it’s just a disc of chocolate with sprinkled flavours on top. The cherry (I suppose) was fairly tart and a nice contrast to the chocolate itself From Slovakia and the chocolate does melt in your fingers

I work with someone who loves the raspberry version, and I always get one when they are in stock. But I do fear for her sugar levels! Too sweet for me. Makes my teeth ache!

I know they’ve been around for awhile, but wanted to throw my YEA in for the Cacio y Pepe raviolis. Damn, those are good. Probably one of my top three filled pastas from TJs.

YEA to the frozen beef bulgogi. Right balance of sweet and savory.

I have to Nay the Kringle too. I have enjoyed them in the past but this year was way too sweet for me. The almond filling seems sweeter and more gooey than I remember. It could just be my taste that has changed but DH did not like either and he likes sweets more than I do. I froze most of it in case one of us gets a super sweet tooth. I suspect it will eventually find its way to the garbage.

Yea to the spicy bar mix. We already ate our two containers. Might have to go back for more.

A friend’s Danish MIL special-orders from the Wisconsin manufacturer of those for Christmas every year, though apparently the TJ’s ones are 1/3 the price of what they actually cost or something similarly crazy.

I REALLY like the seasonal Sweet Corn, Burrata and Basil, and the Beef Bolognese is pretty good.

I have the goat cheese and sun-dried tomato in my downstairs freezer, but have read some meh reviews on that one, so the jury is still out on that one. I’d like to try the Italian sausage and 4 cheese as well.

I disliked the Butternut Squash squash ravs and the Ricotta and Lemon Zest raviolis.

I didn’t think it was worth 10. I can’t imagine paying 30!

My local grocery store (not TJ’s —we don’t have one within 250 miles, darn!) had assorted chocolate coins, but not the brand you mentioned. $1.28 for a 2 oz. bag. ‘U’ on the label. Best of luck finding what you need.

I’ve had the sweet corn and burrata ones and liked the flavors, but find they need very careful cooking to avoid the pasta being overdone and falling apart. I’m spoiled by the excellent ravioli at a local shop that specializes in pasta (and features many seasonal flavors).

The lemon ricotta one is my favorite, I just top with a little butter and freshly grated Parmesan.

It’s not part of my holiday tradition, but it is for several people I know.

(Reminds me of standing in the Indian sweet shop Diwali weekend and having a lady next to me taste 3-4 things and tell the owner after each: “it’s TOO SWEET!” – every other person there was wondering what she was doing in the shop, because that’s what the sweets were supposed to taste like )

Agree on delicate / falling apart. The cauliflower cheese ones are good too, when they have them, but same issue. Lobster aren’t bad for the price, also the mushroom ones. (The chunks of zest in the lemon ricotta are way too big for me.)

You might still need to scrape off some icing, but using mall pieces of the almond kringle along with plain white bread and chopped fruit (pears, apricots, berries, or cherries) makes a good bread pudding. Think of the kringle as frangipane. Don’t use additional sugar.

I would say yea to the kringles (all varieties), but alas, Mrs. ricepad says nay, and I can’t eat a whole one myself, so I’m forced into a de facto nay.

Thanks, I was back at my local TJs yesterday and apparently have missed them for the year.
I will try World Market, see what they have. I like the chocolate better at TJs then other spots.

That is a good idea. I might try that. Thanks.

My MIL has started sending them for my birthday and I think it too late to reverse course.

Maybe you’ll luck out and won’t get one… unless that’s your thing, of course
