Trader Joe’s yea/nay/meh 2019

No tomato is ever as good as a farmers market tomato. But those brown kumato ones at tj’s get me through the winter. They are the best non-cherry grocery tomatoes around.

Not food but they have a newish small air freshener which is really nice. At just under 5" high it is a good size for purse, office desk or travel (non-aerosol). Very nice fresh lemon scent.

I’m not sure if this was already mentioned but I love their mango shave cream that comes in a tube.

Has anyone seen the fall products on the shelves yet? I’m not too keen on pumpkin spice everything, but I am definitely on the lookout for apple and maple flavored items. I’ve also heard good things about the harvest pasta sauce. I will admit that if I happen to spot the pumpkin kringle though, it will likely be coming home with me! Anyone else have fall items they are eager to scoop up?

Pumpkin butter. Although I have seen it sold year round at certain locations. I don’t like pumpkin everything but that butter is a kitchen timesaver vs homemad added to Greek yogurt parfaits, smoothies, bread recipes. It’s on the sweet side so adjusting the sweet ingred. is sometimes necessary.

I saw the harvest pasta sauce in SF SoMa Tj’s along with some other fall things

Unrelated, I’ve never like the tubes of polenta (I find them too dry), but found a way to enjoy them—- toss the polenta in a food processor with some extra water, purée until creamy, microwave till warm. Much easier than making from scratch.

This art on this hot sauce made think of Dia de los Muertos, does that count as fall food? It’s pretty good, haven’t decided if it’s a yay yet. Vinegar based, no sugar.

Mayo question - can someone please enlighten me on how TJ Mayo (regular or organic) compares to your favorite Mayo (I’m thinking Blue Plate or Dukes - or other)?

I find this weird aftertaste - that I don’t enjoy - in both the TJ mayos I mentioned. My only other point of comparison is homemade.

YAY: Baby cauliflower. Had it a couple times now, grilled, roasted, and steamed. Nice flavor, with a little bit of almost radishy spice, and it crisps up very nicely grilled or roasted. Definitely going into our regular vegetable lineup.

Meh: Onion-chive cream cheese. It’s not bad, it’s just nothing special. Thought it would be good with lox, and it was fine, but plain cream cheese would have done just as well.

This was YEA for me.

Nowhere near bagel shop scallion cream cheese, but better than other commercial versions.

As I said, not bad…I think I would have liked it better if it were just chive. I thought the onion kind of drowned out the chive flavor.

New cookie for Fall at TJ, its a Yay for me! Apple Cider Cookies!!!

At least a decade ago, I tried TJ’s mayo for the first and only time. I don’t recall if it was organic or not, but it was distinctly rancid, and I returned it.
