BTW, does anyone know if the dried organic pasta are bronze die cut at Trader Joe’s? It isn’t mentioned on the packaging, but the surface looks pretty rough to me.
Ttrockwood had mentioned TJ’s canned stuffed grapeleaves awhile ago. I finally remembered to buy a can. Then I finally remembered to open the can. Surprisingly good! You would not know they were canned if they were just served on a plate. The can holds more than you would think. This is now part of my storm provisions and late night/empty fridge snack supply.
They’re great for travelling, too. I’ve pulled a can out of my bag for lunch at the Rose Bowl flea market more than once.
Good point! I carry some emergency rations when traveling. I’ve had to use them several times - blizzard, delayed flights, etc.
YAY: Frozen Spicy Salmon Gyozeh. Good salmon flavor, decent but not overpowering heat.
YAY: Mango Joe Joes. Grabbed one of these at the sample table and was surprised at how tasty it was. I wouldn’t have given these cookies a second thought, if I hadn’t tried one; now I might well pick up a box at some point.
NAY: Milk is consistently close to the expiration date. The other day I pulled a quart of 1% out of the case and saw that the sell-by was 2 days away. That’s an extreme case, but it’s not unusual at our store (Masonic in SF) to see sell-by dates 4 or 5 days out on milk. Not sure if this is a chainwide issue, or just our store.
Meh/nay to the freeze dried mangoes. I’d bought a few packets for blending into cocoa butter & white chocolate but they’re insipid and taste like they used all the over-ripe ones for freeze drying (tasted before adding sugar/chocolate).
I love the ‘Just Mango’ dried slices, there’s always a range of sweet to tart pieces, maybe the FD are a different variety of mango. I saved my experiment by adding citric acid but won’t be buying those again. The freeze dried strawberries and raspberries are good, blueberries were also meh.
Yea to Espiral, a Portuguese rose wine. Light and fruity, with a little natural carbonation on opening that goes away soon. $4.99.
I’ve only had the vinho verde from Espiral. Have to look for this one.
Just ok to the guilt free stuffed shells. They have a bit of a bitter flavor to the filling which I don’t understand. But as a low cal option, they are better than most of the weight watchers and lean cuisine pastas. Real cheese and the pasta is not mush. When we last went tho - I saw CHOCOLATE HUMMUS. What? Someone please report. I was too scared to buy and try.
It was served at the sample table today. Pretty good, kind of like a fudge. It might work as a topping for ice cream.
Is chocolate and beans not a weird combo?
Not at all. You can’t really taste the beans. They add a nice thick texture.
Is it similar in texture/mouth feel to halvah?
More like peanut butter, spreadable. I’ve never had Nutella, but maybe it’s like that.
Nutella is a bit thinner in consistency than peanut butter, and definitely won’t stick to the roof of your mouth!
There’s a new fermented Calabrian chile paste. Tasty, but oddly reminiscent of harissa (tastes better than their harissa). Great accompaniment for many things so far - eggs to lamb chops to grilled cheese.
yum! Does it have sugar?
Don’t believe there’s any
Oh, that’s great! I’ve been ordering it from Amazon, but it’s pricey. I did find reasonably priced it a t Wegman’s, but Trader Joe’s is even more convenient.
