trader joe’s: yay/nay/meh 2022

I like the flavor of the frozen waffle fries, but I think they have a quality control issue with the slicing. Seems like half the bag was tiny fragments, with just a handful of full-size waffle fries. (That could just be the bag I happened to buy, of course.)

Update: got another bag, and it had the same problem. So I think it’s probably fair to see this as a general issue with the product, not a one-time glitch.

I would also cook them hotter and longer than the directions indicate. They weren’t as crispy as I would have liked.

Still a YEA-ish for me, because I like waffle fries and nobody else around me seems to carry them.

If you can find the McCain waffle fries at your regular supermarket, I think you’ll be pleased with them.

Thanks for the tip! I haven’t seen that brand at Safeway in our area (the four supermarkets nearest us are all either Safeway or Safeway-owned), but I’ll keep an eye out.

have you tried alexa waffle fries? we used to get them at bjs, pretty good.

A yay for maple kettle corn! I’m a sucker for kettle corn and love to purchase it hot from vendors at fairs and markets. I threw out TJs regular kettle corn after a bite or two but the seasonally available maple kettle corn, while a tad too sweet, comes much closer to a good sweet and salty balance.

best,

Not yet. Safeway has some of their other products, but last time I checked not the waffle fries. Will keep an eye out, thank you!

YEA to the “Middle Eastern Style Kebabs” – they taste really good, but there’s a bit of gristle (doesn’t bother me enough to not eat them, though, and I bought two packs because I suspect they’re testing it out, and they’ll be gone when I go back to the store in a day or two).

I almost bought the Chipotle Pumpkin roasting sauce because I thought it would make a good chicken tinga-ish dish, but sugar is the second ingredient listed (after pumpkin) and that didn’t bode well for me.

Dropped by to double yea their toasted sesame salad dressing - shelf stable. It’s become my favorite bottled dressing over the past year.

I bought the Rutland Red Leicester (YEA!) today and like it. No off-flavor; yours was probably stored improperly. It’s been too many years since the Red Fox brand for me to hazard a comparison.

YEA for the Snapdragon apples, in a 2# bag. This is early season and they may not be as flavorful as last year but are still a favorite. Crunchy, juicy, sweet-tart, and a good keeper. Also, I like their modest size. Some eating apples are just too big for one person. I was so excited to see them that I forgot to check if they had Macouns.

MEH plus for frozen mac & cheese with butternut squash puree in the sauce. With a side of carrot sticks, pretty good as a no-fuss dinner because with very arthritic knees and shoulder, plus arrhythmia, by the time I get the bags up 9 stairs and unpacked, I have zero energy.

By the way, fittingly, en route to the pumpkinundated Burlington, MA, TJ’s, the car passed a pickup truck with a 3’ diameter pumpkin chained in the bed, presumably headed to the Topsfield Fair…

They cook up nicely in the air fryer. But my last bag also had the big/tiny problem. Makes it hard to cook them so everything is done at the same time.

Big YEA for the maple walnut mini biscotti. No actual maple, but a true maple flavor. Probably involves fenugreek. I enjoy them dipped in my daily mug of Constant Comment tea. BTW, after I returned home last winter, following three months of hospital and nursing homes, I wrote a little note to Bigelow Tea, which is a family-owned company. I just wanted to let them know how gratifying it was to be able to resume my little afternoon ritual of tea, cookie, and a couple of dried apricots. The owner sent a small gift basket of a mug and CC tea bags, accompanied by a handwritten note saying that their workers appreciated hearing my comments. This was especially considerate considering that their website mentions that they are no longer able to donate merchandise to charity raffles and the like.

Second your rec for the walnut maple biscotti. Very nice with my cold brew first thing in the morning.

That pretty accurately describes TJ’s, this time of year.

I tried the Cuban citrus garlic / mojo spice shaker but not in its intended use — I sprinkled some on a salad where I needed some zest. Very fragrant.

Had friends over yesterday for happy hour. They brought a bag of TJ’s “pumpkin spice” pretzels, which kind of floored me. Apparently the people fueling this pumpkin spice tsunami are ravenous. The bag wasn’t opened.

Huge nay for the pumpkin bisque. Disgusting. It going back.

MEH: Banana and almond butter smoothie. The banana flavor was very muted and mild while the almond butter was more pronounced. The label said that they added vanilla for flavor but I didn’t detect that at all. It also packed a whopping 320 calories while not satisfying my hunger at all.

Likewise YEA to the pumpkin mini biscotti, though I prefer the maple walnut.

Giant YEA for the Salted Maple Ice Cream. I was hesitant because I loathe the concept of making desserts and candy taste salty. This doesn’t, thankfully. The maple comes through well; the texture is creamy and moderately dense.

I didn’t care for the salt in the ice cream.

I love salt in desserts, and I love maple. Will check it out :slightly_smiling_face:
