Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

WOW!!

No… just no.

Quoting my post from March 6. Today, that station was $3.94 cash, $4.04 credit. But I saw a couple of other stations around town charging as much as $4.89.

I’m about 40 min from Baltimore and fresh Maryland lump crab has been at 50/60 lb here for a good couple years. It came down a tiny bit last year, maybe, but it’s still a very, very rare treat these days. Homemade crab cakes maybe once/year.

Last time I looked -59.99 - so, yeah. . This was quite a jump

Gnarly.

I feel bad for my local fishmonger; eating local crab in the summer is a long-standing tradition here as well, but few will splurge at those prices.

I hate to think what steamed crabs cost. I haven’t done those in a lifetime. Besides. All my tables are glass. :joy: bang bang oops.

After we made a donation to our Local Food bank (last month), Sunshine wanted to see if we could continue to make a monthly donation. I agreed.

I said to her “If you don’t mind eating repeats, I think I can squeeze the budget a little tighter so we’ll be able to get some food for the food bank.” Her response was perfect… “If I eat repeats, someone else gets to eat.”

I watched the sales this month and was able to gather 14 boxes of Mac & Cheese (on sale for 50 cents per box), 6 cans of sliced beets and 6 cans of peas and some pasta. Not a huge haul, but it may help a little bit.

I eat a LOT of blsl chicken thighs. I get them from my butcher, and almost always just season and grill them. Then I eat them cold for lunch. I wish my butcher carried them with bone and skin still included, for more recipe options, but they just don’t.

I walked into the regular grocery store the other day, and in a case up front, they inexplicably had enormous "value"sized packages of thighs with skin and bone for like 75% off. I checked the sell-by dates carefully, then absconded out of there with this high-value sale item - my only regret is that I didn’t buy like three more packs (not surprisingly, they were gone the next day.) The package got broken down and frozen immediately. Huge steal.

I gotta ask my butcher why they don’t carry these.

Just got back from my bike ride to the grocery stores for the Friday Sales!!
(1) Pork Chops - Value Pack $.77/pound (a little fatty and will need to be trimmed, but still a good price)
(2) Avocados - 27 Cents/each (limit 5) I’ll ripen them in a brown bag and make some type of sushi for Sunshine (forgot to get a cucumber - next trip)
(3) Potatoes - 5 pound bag $.97 (used up my potatoes last night)

Bone-in, skin-on is my fave to prepare for myself. Handy leftover portions, too.

The portion size is undefeated.
It’s one of the things I like most about them.

I was checking the “preview” of this week’s sales/specials. One store has eggs for 47 cents for a dozen. I’m thinking that has to be a mis-print. But if its not, the limit is 2 dozen, so I’ll grab them on Wednesday morning. Sunshine loves egg salad and I can always make some type of quiche.

Another store had “bone-in” chicken thighs for $.77/pound, so I’ll get a pack of those. Thighs and legs are Sunshine’s favorite. I know she would prefer boneless/skinless, but bone-in will work.

Potatoes are also on sale, but I have a 5 pound bag in stock already. I did see a recipe for potato cakes (on YouTube), I imagine I could add some ground turkey or chopped ham to the recipe and make it a main course??

I refer to The Visual Capitalist all the time. They are great at making statistics interesting.

I’m not sure how that would turn out, but what about:

These potato “chops” are delicious, and I usually use ground turkey.

If you have curry powder or other spice blend, you can use it instead of individual spices, or skip it entirely if you prefer.

I sometimes mix up the meat and potatoes if I’m feeling lazy to stuff them, though they taste better stuffed. Or you can layer it in a baking dish (potato layer, meat layer, potato layer) and cut into squares after baking. I might do that next time.

Well it wasn’t a mis-print and I got two dozen eggs for under $1 (47 cents per dozen + tax)

I also picked up a 5 pound bag of potatoes – thank you everyone for the great recipe ideas.

It was a loss leader (aka bait) to get you in the door  They were hoping you would be tempted to buy some of their other stuff.

You are correct… I guess I’m not the average shopper.

I’m rather regimented (in this area) and stick to my list.

By the way, gas is still $5.00/gallon (here). I just pedaled on by – enjoying my morning bicycle ride.

The weather was perfect this morning and I actually caught myself smiling. No reason – just happy, I guess.
