Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

The whole job was about 30 minutes – I’m quite happy to receive a ham for my services.

When the guy said he had to cut off the water at the main, I knew I had to fix it – even if it meant I had to sweat in a straight coupler. I didn’t want them to be without water for a day or two until they could a plumber to come to the house. And I’m glad that the valve from my collection found a home, I’ve toting around way too much copper from house to house.

I just finished grocery shopping and the last store I went into had cases of mangoes ON SALE for $22. I don"t think I’ve ever seen them that expensive.

I went for an early morning bike ride – mainly for fun, but I did stop and check for clearance items at the grocery stores. Nothing I could really use, but still enjoyed my little trip.

As I turned for home, I passed the gas station – Regular Unleaded was up to $5.09/gallon. Yep – over $5.00/gallon!! YIKES!!

It’s been $1.84- $1.879 CAD/litre this past week in London, ON, and in neighboring Strathroy and Mount Brydges.

At $1.879 CAD/l, the conversion comes to $5.10 USD/ American liquid gallon, with today’s exchange rate.

Amazing that the price for gas is the same in Texas, Texas has typically had much cheaper gas than Ontario. $5.10 USD/ Gallon is very high for us, too.

I found gas at $1.69 CAD/l (but $2.02 CAD/l for 91 octane) 20 miles outside town, outside St Thomas, so I filled up there. The gas was $1.74 CAD/l at the 4 gas stations I drove past in downtown St Thomas.

How many mangoes in a case?

There were 12 per case which is average. The box on top seemed to have way more than that - I’m not sure how that happened. I checked the boxes on either side and the row underneath and they all seemed to have 12 mangoes per box. I didn’t buy any :sad_but_relieved_face: I love mangoes and I miss the olden days when I used to get them on sale for $6.99 a case.

The big champagne mangoes pictured are $2-3 each around here. The smaller ones can be found for $1-2 in season.

Other varieties can often be cheaper. I’ll keep an eye out for case prices in south asian neighborhoods as mango season has commenced.

The grocery store I was in doesn’t have very good sales. I was just floored at the price. I’m hoping to squeeze in a trip to Chinatown in a week or two. Their sale prices are much better.

It seems we are staying fairly consistent with our price matches.

I wonder when it will start going down…

Check the Indian stores in Ottawa, too. And Arz or Adonis, if handy.

The best mangoes I have found in Toronto are from the stores in Little India. Good prices and very good quality fruit . They carry some of the more fragrant varieties, especially in May. Some of those cases cost $25 or $30 because those mangoes are special. Suresh Doss (former Chowhound, CBC personality, food writer ) posts when they’re available, on Twitter, FB and Instagram.

@Saregama, i usually see single champagne mangoes at around $2 or $3 each, but that’s at a grocery store. I am really fussy about my produce, mostly buying it at 3 indie grocery stores, or one of 5 greengrocers, unless I head to Little India.

I just checked the “preview” sale circulars for this week and the only thing on sale this week is potatoes. I’m all stocked up on potatoes.

Even the sale prices on chicken and chicken parts are high!! I’m guessing diesel prices (for trucking the food in) are starting to hit.

Another week of repeats and leaning on the freezer & pantry.

I’ll keep checking for clearance items. I feel like a gambler going to the craps table and blowing on his dice when I walk to meat & fish section… Please, please, please let there be something on clearance that I can use. Secretly, I’m hoping for fish – but I’ll take anything at this point.

Our store has a section in the deli department where they sell the leftover ends of sliced meats and cheeses. Usually everything is $1.99/lb. I started shopping in that section to make mac and cheese. I saw no pin tin paying full prices for chunks of cheese I was going to cut up and melt. I could also get an assortment of types to mix up. I also use it to buy meats when I want to make a
chopped antipasto.

With your creativity I’m sure you could put together something delicious if your stores have something similar.

Some fish counters I know do that with the fish trimmings, as well. The scraps make great chowder and/or fish cakes. Can’t hurt to ask.

Good idea.

My favourite store has 3 separate discounted luncheon meat options, which are sold by weight at the deli: salami mix, ham mix, and chicken /turkey mix. At this store, you tell them how much you want and they weigh out that amount. Another nice thing about this store is that the discounted luncheon meats are mostly extra slices, when their staff sliced too much for a customer, or the customer wanted thinner or thicker slices, so the slices aren’t all end pieces. I would say less than 5 percent of the luncheon meat is end pieces.

Most other delis at stores near me have discounted luncheon meats ends pre-wrapped.

I like the salami mix. The same deli has about 30 different Salamis available, so it’s possible to end up with a nice mix. I know some people that use these end slices for pizzas or subs.

The same grocery store makes discounted cheese samplers, which add pre wrapped, with three 1 or 2 ounce pieces of cheese, from near the end of a wheel or block.

There was one store that was advertising that it was going to keep cabbage at $.68/pound. I’ll wander in there and see if its still that price.

These mangoes were $18 for 9 in Costco today.

We have more fish scraps than I now what to do with. Mr Bean is an avid fisher, and pretty good at it. I haven’t bought fish in years.

I love this idea!

The ones I get are plastic wrapped foam trays. There are all kinds of variations. It’s usually by type but sometimes there will be a mixture. Meat and cheese are never mixed.
