Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

So maybe 6 pounds? Tat sounds good! I’m the primary ham fan, so I’m always looking for a small one.

Was more curious about the pricing. Not sure I’ll buy any of these.

(Last year I bought the carver ham at TJs which was very good — think that was 6.99/lb but no bone and crate-free. Their spiral ham is also 6.99 I think and also crate-free.)

According to Instacart that’s pretty average for prices around here this time of year. The lowest I’m seeing is $1.49/lb. (Aldi) with the organic market being $3.49/lb. Lots of $1.99s (which are probably more like $1.79 in store?).

3.49 also seems cheap. I didn’t even think organic would exist, but I saw yesterday that Whole Foods is carrying an organic spiral ham at 6.99.

So… Neighbor #2 gave Sunshine and I a “Walmart Gift Card” for all that we had done for her over the past few months. I had always refused to take money, so she came up with the idea of a gift card. I know she is struggling (financially) with all of her medical co-pays and deductibles, but she really wanted us to have something.

Any who, I talked to Sunshine and we both agreed to use 1/3 of the card to re-stock our pantry and freezer, save 1/3 for a “rainy day” and use the last 1/3 for groceries for our local food bank to help those that are struggling. I’ve heard on the news that some people are already losing their SNAP benefits.

On the way home from Sunshine’s first PT session, we made a Walmart run and picked this up.

I loaded it into my bicycle cargo trailer and delivered it this morning. The food bank was quite happy to receive the donation.

Lidl has spiral ham on sale for 1.29 this week

I think it’s really lovely that you are giving back even when you may not necessarily have a lot of extra space in your budget.

That is so kind of you to help the food bank. Most food banks are struggling right now and even where I live they said donations are down since the cost of living has gone up so high. People need to eat so I don’t know how they manage. It makes me all the more thankful I can put food in my tummy.

I went to buy chocolate for cookies the other day, and almost had a heart attack. Inexpensive Lindt bars (4 oz) were over six dollars apiece! I happened to glance over at the (typically more expensive) Ghirardelli and it was on sale, so I bought that, but SHEESH.

My BJ’s club sells multipacks of Lindt, and around Christmas I always buy those for baking, so maybe I’ve missed the price increases by virtue of not having recently bought single bars. Fortunately, I’m not a chocolate obsessive when it comes to baking (prefer fruit.)

Not only that. I bought some Lindt chocolate and a 100grm only weight 80 grams. They are cheating. My scale is accurate.

Gosh, that is so heartwarming to hear. Your neighbor, you, and Sunshine are showing such generosity. Thanks for making the day brighter (mine included).

Funny Story…

So yesterday there was a knock at my door, it was the neighbor who had given me the bacon for changing his exterior garage light bulb.

He asked me if I knew anything about plumbing. I told him yes, that I had fixed up and sold a few houses and done quite a bit of plumbing repairs. Apparently, he was trying to tighten the packing on the supply valve for his hot water heater and broke the valve. Water was going everywhere, so he shut off the main. His wife couldn’t find a plumber to come out on Sunday and she suggested he come see me.

I went down to his house found a broken 3/4" gate valve and told him I could put in a new one. I always keep various copper valves, unions, fittings, etc in the garage for plumbing projects. Luckily, I had one 3/4" gate valve in stock. I grabbed my MAPP torch and related supplies. Heated up & removed the old broken valve, cleaned the pipes, sweated in the new one, turned the water back on, bled the lines and checked for leaks. All good – All fixed.

Again, he tried to pay me and I refused money. Then he tried to give me a Ham. I told him I can’t take your Easter Ham. Then the wife chimed in “You got the water back on – take the ham!!” She said they’d go to the store tomorrow and get another ham.

I put the ham in the freezer for a later date. I was going to make it for our Easter Dinner, but Sunshine wants Turkey, since I didn’t prepare one for Thanksgiving.

TL;DR - Fixed Neighbor’s plumbing – he gave a ham.

Starting Wednesday, potatoes go on sale $.77 for a 5 pound bag. I’ll get up early and get two bags. I’m out of potatoes and can definitely use them.

Nothing else on sale, but the pantry and freezer are still fairly well stocked.

Lucky neighbor to have you save the day!

Also, another funny story. Years ago when we moved into our first house, my husband told me a story about a co-worker of his who attempted to install a new toilet late one evening after all the stores were closed. You guessed it: The toilet cracked during the installation. The family had to go without until a home improvement store opened early the next morning. Yikes.

From that cautionary tale we learned never to attempt certain repairs on nights/weekends. What could possibly go wrong?

Scored a pound of pork chorizo for $1.60 on clearance (not a great price, but still pretty good).

I may try a Chorizo meatloaf or a Chorizo and Potato casserole.

I used to be able to find a pound of Chorizo for under a $1.00 (on clearance), sadly I think those days are over.

That is pretty epic all around. You deserved more than a ham, really!!
