Score! I love ramen and wouldn’t hesitate to feed it to my family and neighbors. When I first got married (at age 40) I wasn’t much of a cook. The first dinner the hubs and I had together at home was - you guessed it - ramen. No shame here.
Why not? You don’t need to serve them as straight ramen.
They make a great base for Yakisoba or a stir-fry – add cole slaw mix or shredded cabbage, and a protein (even a scrambled egg works, though shredded chicken or sauteed ground turkey / chicken are nice).
Or you can make them into a more substantial noodle soup – flash cook the noodles and drain, make a soup base you like with veg & protein, add the noodles back at the end (here’s an example of curry-style ramen soup).
You can use a portion of the seasoning packet in any prep for a flavor base, or skip it for a sauce of your own making.
Potatoes are on sale this week $.97 for 5 pounds, so I’ll probably pick up 10 pounds. Also tuna is on sale again 10 cans for $5. I have some in stock, but at that price – I’ll buy more (just in case).
I’m on the fence about getting some “bone-in” chicken for $.99 pound. I might get some drumsticks. I’m thinking Sunshine should be able to eat them with one hand (kind of like King Henry VIII with his turkey leg).
I picked up (2) 5 pound bags of potatoes this morning and wandered over to the clearance section. I found this bag of Baby Lima Beans for 50 cents. SCORE!!
I love those.
They’d make a nice pot of rice and beans too (I like the green version with baby limas – cilantro, aromatics, green chillies, scant spices like cumin, etc).
Although I have a good amount of tuna in stock, I’m glad to have some backups (just in case)
As I pedaled on by the local gas station, I did notice that gasoline prices seem to jump up about 60 cents overnight. I haven’t needed any gas for a couple of weeks, so I’m not sure when the price jumped.
We had a warning on Wed that the gas would increase overnight here in Ontario. Regular Unleaded has been around $1.35-$1.39 CAD/ litre in the bigger cities for the past month. I was often able to fill up in a few smaller towns at $1.21- $1.25 CAD/ litre.
Today, regular unleaded in the city was $1.48 CAD/l, the most I’ve seen Ontario gas cost in 5 years.
$1.48 CAD = $1.09 USD today, and 3.785 litres go into one gallon, so gas in London, ON is costing $4.12 USD/ gallon today.
I filled up my car yesterday (I don’t drive much these days but I don’t like having an empty tank) and I was waiting to see how much the price was going to go up - it was $3.59 for premium. Today Gas Buddy says it’s $3.79. Regular is $3.49. The closest station to my home, which I never go to, is listing $4.23 for premium. We’re almost at covid levels I guess. I’ve only driven 600 miles in the last 3 months.
I will let you know how much my premium gas (91 octane) costs next time I fill up. I was able to fill up when Regular Unleaded was $1.35 CAD/ l and my 91 octane was around $1.60 CAD/l.
Other than doctor’s appointments that are out of town, I’m leaving the car in the garage.
I went to my dentist last week (for a cleaning) on my bicycle. She is local and I just didn’t feel like dealing with the hassle of getting the car out of the garage or other drivers or parking.
It started to jump up in my area of New England on Monday. I filled up at my local station on Saturday morning. The price had been holding steady for a couple of weeks. And then…
I’ve not been out today (PTO) but according to Gas Buddy, my station is pricing Regular gas today at $3.10/gallon.
That is a 57 cent increase in 6 days. It’s only going to continue going up.

One of our dogs (the old, possibly a bit senile one) kind of helped us solve the tater problem while the 2 college age kids aren’t around to help eat them.
He got so he’d go into the pantry, shred open the tough plastic dog food bag (shredding his gums in the process) and gorge himself. So we have to keep the pantry door closed all the time. The back end of the pantry is along an exterior wall, the house is poorly insulated, and voila! a 55°F-ish pantry keeps potatoes for several weeks.
