yikes, steep.
LOL - as a percentage that sounds impressive. But when the actual net increase is 80 cents for the year, Iām thinking this little luxury snack is still affordable. And happily egg prices here have dropped by more than a dollar a dozen over the past few months.
But if she buys a pack a week, thatās almost $42 more for the year.
And when your cart is full of 50 items going up $0.80 each⦠That adds up
Lots of assumptions, there⦠weekly purchase, 50 items, ALL going up? For us, a large shop is 30 items when thereās a BOGO special.
What has been interesting for me, is how some items, that are staples for us, have gone up so quickly compared to others. The dried prunes I bought for years, that were $4.99 CAD per lb in 2020, are now $10.99 CAD. I switched to another brand that costs $6.69 CAD/ lb at my local indie grocery, and sells for $9.99 CAD/lb at the National chain grocers.
Other staples, like Quaker Minute Oats oatmeal, are kept artificially low through loss leaders.
Most staples are creeping up gradually. Grapes are now $5.99 CAD /lb regular price at most stores, but on sale at chain stores for $3.99 CAD/ lb most weeks. But if the more expensive grapes are less shriveled, I admit, this is privileged, I buy the expensive grapes that look better so I have less waste and they last longer.
The groceries on the whole are getting more expensive.
I meant to counter the suggestion you seemed to be making that $.80 wouldnāt break the bank because it was presumably an annual purchase.
Maybe I misunderstood.![]()
Yes, I can see how you could misunderstand what I wrote. When presented as " 20 percent" it sounds like a very large increase, but when the increase is ā80 centsā, to me thatās relatively small.
As if on cue, I found a mashed potato pie that is made with
- a potato crust made of rosti potatoes (boiled, grated, blind-baked), into which is spooned
- a lot of Duchess potatoes (mashed spuds enriched with egg yolk), and then itās all topped with
- sliced potatoes
Weāre staring down another weekend of frigid temps here, so I might just make this!
keep us/me posted on recipe and tips - that looks stunningly yummy!
Latest totals for groceries, paper products and soap (i.e, not including alcohol or meals out) - $144/week average over the past 12 weeks (mid-Nov to now). That span includes Thanksgiving, Christmas cookie baking, Christmas and New Years. Assuming we ate out once weekly, itās costing us $3.61 per person per meal at home.
This is great!!
Really good job at tracking & watching your budget!!
I can send the recipe to you if you like, but I donāt think I can message youā¦?
NBC has been tracking the prices of eggs, beef, orange juice, bread etc for the last year.
there are some price tracking apps, as well
(sorry if they have already been mentioned)
this one of for deals for groceries (for iPhones)
this looks like a fair amount of work, for Cdn price tracking of specific products
ā¦..
the Canadian govt has this tool
Interesting. No midwestern city other than Chicago on the NBC list, and prices here are about $1 -2 per unit lower than the US average.
pricing/costs vary by āareaā
press/internet āwritersā generally donāt do āother areasā - they only project what is happening in their ueber/highly restricted āareaā as being āthe truthā for the whole worldā¦
Not much on sale this week. One grocery store had frozen vegetables on sale (limit 4). I went there early in search of frozen broccoli, as Iām completely out of broccoli and have been for a few weeks. There were exactly 4 bags - I grabbed them. 16 ounce bag for $.67 - not bad at all (total spend $2.68 + tax). I might make a cheese broccoli soup. Sunshine doesnāt like ābread bowlsā, so Iāll serve hers in a regular bowl.
I still have a good supply of āprotein itemsā in the pantry and freezer. I will also be checking for āclearanceā items this week.
There might be some repeats, but weāll be OK.
I love Ikeaās broccoli potato cakes (gronsakskaka) if you want to try your hand at them ā package ingredients are potatoes, broccoli, cream, eggs, leeks, onions, cheese, and herbs.
Theyāre easy to form in muffin tins, or you can just bake in a pie plate or as a casserole.
Great Idea⦠Thanks!!
