Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

Did you grow up there? Just curious.

I heard from Neighbor #2 and she really liked the Spinach & Neufchatel cheese peirogies. As luck would have it, I got an email from another grocery store with a one day digital coupon offer on cream cheese (4 for $5). Perhaps they research each other’s sales circulars?? Any who, I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth; I got up early, posted the digital coupon, rode up there on my bicycle and secured more cream cheese.

I know Neighbor #2 isn’t a fan of my homemade pizza, so on nights I serve pizza to Sunshine, I’ll defrost and prepare peirogies for her.

And since this is a tracking expenses thread, I have calculated that I can make 36 spinach/cream cheese/onion peirogies for about $5.52 which is 92 cents for a serving of six. (That cost will have to be adjusted if Neighbor #2 decides she wants a sauce.)

I was thinking about the cream cheese thread here last night when I went out to buy some myself. The local BJ’s has a good deal on them, but you have to buy a 6-pack. I did this last Christmas, reasoning I’d use them, but I wound up throwing at least 2 away when they expired and molded.

I’ve already put today’s cream cheese haul in the chest freezer. I’ll defrost 2 at a time and make up more peirogies when the time comes.

I picked up this fairly nice chest freezer at Target a few years ago. They were having some type of on-line only sale. It was a bit of a hassle to purchase it on line, then take the truck to a further store to pick the thing up. Surprisingly, when I arrived – it was already in customer service and two guys put it on my truck for me.

I keep a list/map of what is in it and try to meal plan accordingly.

This is excellent advice! I keep a list of what’s in my freezer and my pantry and I plan my meals accordingly. Like you, I like to stock up on items when they are on sale so in the long run I save a ton of money.

I can’t take credit for the list suggestion… @LindaWhit gave me the idea!

My Excel spreadsheet has been a lifesaver for me in the past! And just recently, I’ve been ā€œeating the freezerā€ this past week to empty out some of the items I had in my upstairs freezer: Pork and Sweet Potato Stew, a slice of Lemon Pot Roast and gravy that all I had to do was boil some potatoes and carrots, and a container of Chicken-Corn Chowder for a work lunch.

I just need to stop buying new things to go into the freezers before I’ve used up the older things.

I admire your attention to detail. the only Excel spreadsheet I have is of my silver flatware pieces; I am really unskilled at Excel.

Potatoes are on sale (this week) for 78 cents for 5 pound bag (limit 2). I grabbed two bags this morning. If I can’t find a use for them, I’ll make up some Gnocchi and freeze it for a later date.

SCORE!! I found these Summer Sausages on clearance for $1.50/each (Originally $10.99/each). I have no idea why they were marked so low, but I grabbed them. Each is 1.25 pounds, so that is $1.20/pound for a nice protein.

OK… Hungry Onions, what do I do with them. I can make a nice pasta salad, fried rice, soup/stew or quiche with them. Any other ideas?? Thank you in advance!

I’d look for recipes calling for Kielbasa, Spanish chorizo, Andouille, or Portuguese LinguiƧa.

Also a good use of those potatoes!

You could also use both in runzas/bierocks.

Sliced up and fried with pierogi. Also just fried with cabbage, onions, and egg noodles.

Chop it up in scrambled eggs.
Sliced with cheese and crackers.
Roll some up in crescent rolls and bake them?
Chop it up for a homemade pizza.

Or maybe a skillet dish like this?

OMG! That would make a cool pizza!!

+1 for fried up with scrambled eggs. :cooking:

With cheese and crackers is how the roomate consumes them. Camping trips always had one or two.

In the UK you can buy frozen baked potatoes, roast potatoes and mashed potatoes, so you could potentially do all of these with your stash of potatoes?

Smoked sausage lends a lot of umami flavour to a vegetable-heavy pasta sauce. I sometimes make a pasta sauce like this in bulk (and use up any stray vegetables in the fridge drawer) and freeze quite a lot of it.

Sorry, I meant to specify you could make these preps and freeze as needed.

I don’t think I’ve seen (skin on) frozen baked potatoes (here). They may exist somewhere here, but I’ve never seen them.

I do keep instant mashed potatoes in stock – for those nights I need a throw together dinner.
