Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

That’s more than I expected, because it’s not that much more in the city (vs the steak price, which is a bigger differential).

Creamed eggs on toast is a childhood favorite - just hard-boiled eggs chopped up in bechamel, ladled over torn-up toast (with or without butter). Quick and easy (and satisfying without any additional ingredients, perfect when the fridge/freezer is semi-bare).

We’ve had creamed tuna on toast when I was a kid and I still make it from time to time as an adult. It’s the same idea as the creamed egg on toast - stir in a can of tuna to a bechamel sauce and serve over toast.

Groceries are running close to $300 CAD per week for me and 2 DCs. Our pantry is full for winter, and our freezer is pretty well-stocked.

Recently, my weekly shopping trip to my local indie grocery store costs $200. I spend around $100 a a week elsewhere, either at smaller local businesses for specific goods such as baked goods or local produce, or at a national chain store for detergent , paper products or canned goods.

This past weekend was the last weekend for some farm markets in Lambton County. I came home on Sunday with $75 of cauliflower, squash, potatoes, cabbage, 2 fruit pies, and apples.

Scallops are up to $45 CAD per pound, after being closer to $40 CAD per pound over the past 2 years at my local indie grocery store where I buy 75 percent of my meat, seafood and produce in London. Faroe Islands Salmon, pickerel and haddock are running $20 CAD per pound while Halibut and Lake Erie Yellow Perch cost $40 CAD per pound.

For those in Ontario, Quaker Oats was on sale at Food Basics for $3.50 CAD/ bag this week. That’s a good price for Quaker oatmeal in Canada.

Yes, there are endless variations - my mom sometimes used the really thin “lunch meat” corned beef slices and called it creamed chipped beef on toast. Tuna sounds pretty good, I may give that a try soon!

Company creamed tuna - as mentioned in August - a tiny bit more effort but worth it.

This sounds so good!! I can’t wait to try it…

We made the same thing in my family except only the chopped boiled egg whites went in the sauce. The hard-boiled yolk was mashed with a fork and sprinkled on top, mimosa style.

One of my favorite quiches is spinach, but it has to be fresh or frozen spinach and with fresh cremini 'rooms. Another is a green chile quiche, using fresh roasted or canned.

My mom would add peas to this one. The really thin beef slices came in a jar.

My parents liked two different kinds of “chipped beef” meat – one was salted and dried, the other was more deli-meat rubbery. They made two separate batches so each could have their preferred style of SOS :joy:

I got a “sneak preview” of what is going on sale on Wednesday morning.
5 pound bag of potatoes for $.97 (limit 2)
Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs $1.97 (limit 2 value packs)

And another store has …
Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts $.88 pound (maximum 10 pounds)

I know Sunshine likes thighs better than breasts, maybe I’ll get a little of both??

Either way, I’m really happy they have something on sale that I can use. I’ll set my alarm clock & try to get there early for the sale!!

YEA!!

Success!!

I set my alarm clock, got up early, hooked the cargo trailer to my bicycle and set out just before sunrise.

I got 10 pounds of boneless skinless chicken breasts, 4 pounds of boneless skinless chicken thighs and 10 pounds of potatoes. I think we are good for a little while (as long as Sunshine doesn’t start growing feathers, that is )

Can’t beat those deals, damn! I can’t find either of those for less than $2.49/lb here.

Yes, these are part of the digital coupons for this week. I wonder if they are the “Loss Leaders” that draw you into the store, hoping you’ll pick up other full price items??

They usually sell out fairly quickly, so I try to get there when they open.

Today in line ahead of me, a gentleman was purchasing 24 packages of Bar-S hot dogs. The clerk commented about his hot dog cook out, he confessed that the dogs were for his dogs. At 88¢ for 8, I guess it was a deal.

Do they offer rain checks if they run out?

On some items they do… and others they don’t. I really don’t know which ones qualify for rain checks and which do not.

I really needed something for variety for Sunshine. And today she was able to have some chicken salad for lunch instead of bologna. YEA!!

I’ve made many laps at a Lidl near my gym when I’m procrastinating going into the gym, and I’ve started to understand their meat markdown strategies.

They have a small selection of things on sale provided you use the coupons in their app. They have another (ever-smaller) category of things on sale where you don’t need the digital app. And then they have things marked down because their sell-by date is approaching; this mark-down is a flat 25%. Tricky thing is that the 25% discount needs to be taken off by a cashier, but they barely staff the non-self-checkouts. So you have to prowl around and look for help.
