Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

I think I’m in love! Where have you been hiding?! All joking aside, a very thorough analysis of your store-to-store spending!

The Safeway increase in spring of 2024 shows when the protected bike lane opened so I could get there safely. The drop in expenditures since March this year is me trying to watch costs. I started doing most of the shopping this spring, so my wife drives to WinCo less often. (This is all roughly what I guessed, but it was nice to see that the numbers reflect what I thought was happening.) Maybe I’ll roll together Albertson’s and Safeway in the next iteration of this - they’ve got the same prices; I just go to Albertson’s if I am in that neighborhood for other reasons.

I decided to include a rolling average because we’ve got a chest freezer and a lot of pantry space, so I wanted to smooth out the “stock up on this or that” spikes.

Just wanted to give you a “thumbs up” for grocery store bicycling. I do the majority of our grocery shopping by bicycle.

I also up-cycled an old child bicycle trailer (I got from Goodwill) into a bicycle cargo trailer. This is perfect for my bigger grocery shopping, going to multiple stores or taking a small ice chest along (for very perishable items). [I’ve posted this pic before, but thought it might be worth a re-post]

Just checked the advanced copy of this week’s (grocery store) circulars and nothing is on sale (that I can use or afford). Luckily, my pantry and freezer are fairly well stocked – there may be some repeats, but we won’t go hungry.

There is always a chance I’ll find something on clearance.

Score!! I decided to go through my digital coupons again and lo and behold there was one for Ahi Tuna. YEA!! I don’t know how I missed it the first time. Any who, $5.99 for a one pound package is good enough. So, I rode up there early this morning and grabbed a pack.

This should make 3-4 servings for Sunshine. She was so excited to hear she is having sushi Saturday night.

That’s a great price, especially with the bloodlines removed!

Another store has avocados for $.67/each and cucumbers for $.59/each. Now that I have the tuna, I’ll pick up an avocado and a cucumber so I can make something similar to a Kalifornia roll, but with tuna instead of Krab.

She’ll get an assortment of different sushi rolls. Sunshine loves her some sushi!!

If you have sriracha and mayo, I like a good spicy tuna roll. Add a little crunch (from something like toasted panko or anything else that won’t get soggy) and it’s even better :face_savoring_food:

Thank you for the suggestions…

On the way home from taking Sunshine to the doctor, I stopped off and grabbed (2) 25 pound bags of flour. Walmart had them for $10.72/bag (plus tax). I feel better with a little extra flour in stock.

I too am tempted to place my personal order with Sushi Chef Dan for Saturday night.

Tax on necessary food items?

Yes… 1.75% (at this particular Walmart store) I think this particular store is located on the Salt River Pima Reservation and the tax is slightly lower. I stop there as it is on the way home from one of Sunshine’s doctors.

I’m not 100% sure, but based on which city or county you purchase the item – different higher tax rates apply on necessary food items.

My favorite legal answer: it depends.

So, I pulled some of my “local” receipts from where I ride my bicycle to and I’m paying 2.9% tax on food. That could be a combination of State, County and Local tax – they don’t give a breakdown.

So yes, the Pima Native Americans charge less tax on food, as they are a sovereign territory and can make their own tax laws.
