Tracking household grocery expenses - what do you spend?

The only thing on sale this week was potatoes. 5 pounds for 99 cents, I just grabbed two bags.

Quick question… is it hard to make gnocchi (from scratch)?? I don’t have a gnocchi board and assume I can use a fork??

I’ve only made gnocchi once, in a cooking class, and we used a fork to shape the gnocchi. So that part is very doable.

I’ll leave it to experienced folks to weigh in on the rest since I don’t think one round of gnocchi is enough for me to be knowledgeable enough overall.

It is not hard to make gnocchi, but it is easy to make dense gnocchi or gnocchi that disintegrate.

How you treat the potato influences how much flour is needed, and the texture in the end.

You can steam or bake the potatoes instead of boil to prevent water logging and the need for too much flour.

I’ve seen suggestions for non-AP flours (potato, etc) but I haven’t tried any myself.

Could I microwave the potatoes (skin on)?? Then remove the skin and eat it later or give it to the rabbits…

80/20 regular ground beef at our local grocery store (part of a two state chain) $7.98/lb. It is what it is. We’re going for rib eyes tonight! It is a splurge!

Can’t think of a reason not to.

Yes, but in our experience you lose more moisture when baking them in the oven

Two ribeyes, choice, not prime @ 18.98 per pound fed 2 regular adults + one 1/2 stomach adult. Nicely grilled by the roomate, it was our Labor Day holiday dinner early.

Russet Potatoes

Thanks… Yes, there was also a video – I’ll watch that later tonight, along with an inquiry on youtube.

Doesn’t look that hard… famous last words.

I’ll post pictures of my first attempt – fail or not.

Same Lucky’s is back to more reasonable prices for ground beef this week.

Ummm. Maybe it’s bc we don’t often buy snacks for “just” us, but … we’re entertaining tomorrow and needed some things to munch on at tomorrow’s potluck. I’m shocked.

I’m sorry, but FIVE DOLLARS EIGHTY NINE for a bag of cheetos. Are you f’n kidding me? I thought everything was going to be cheaper?

Same shelf price here in MN for that 8.5 oz size, but the larger “party size” 15 oz was on sale for less for 1 bag, and also had a 3/$12 offer (must buy 3).

Who told you that?
That’s about the going rate for snackies here, but not the ‘family size’ bag. Like the ribeyes we bought yesterday, a rare splurge.

We draw the line at Cheetos and Fritos at $5.69. Enough is Enough. Lay’s potato chips are down to $2,50. You know why. Because people are tired of paying the prices.

I’ve found snackies are reduced in price for Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day. Not advertised, just in store specials.

Boneless, skinless Chicken Breasts are on sale for $1.99/pound (digital coupon) – not a great price, but I need something. So, I got up early, posted my digital coupons, and picked up the limit of 8 pounds. The meat clerk was a very nice woman who picked through the breasts and got me 7.930 pounds, so I could be under the 8 pound limit.

They also had a pound of strawberries for $.97. Sunshine can eat them right out of the carton or I’ll make some kind of desert out of them (her choice).

Not much on sale this week, other than cheese. I do have some ham in the freezer and I can make some tortillas.

Maybe “Chopped Ham and Cheese” Quesadilla(s)??
