This is for the Serious Eats taco filling, to which I add half ground pork, but I have some pork I ground when some part I can’t recall was on sale.
I get it. Not chastising you for buying it. I’m sure you’ve well earned the money to buy it. Just a little sticker shock to me. I kind of reserve the “good stuff” in terms of ground beef for burgers. I’ll go 90-95% when I go to the butcher for my annual cannibal samiches. That’s like $8/lb
The other day, I did see a 5 pound chub of hamburger (I think it was 73/27) on clearance for $15.72. I ran the numbers in my head and it was still over $3/pound, so I passed on it.
The only things on sale this week (for me) were peanut butter and blueberries. I’ve got a few recipes that use peanut butter and I can always make peanut butter rice as a side.
I’m thinking about making a “Breakfast for Dinner” night and serve Blueberry pancakes for dinner - we’ll see. I can always make a blueberry cobbler for a dessert.
Funny story… whenever I go to this one grocery store, my first stop is the fish section. I’m always on the lookout for “clearance” tilapia or salmon. I feel like a gambler in Las Vegas blowing on his dice before rolling them. In my brain, I’m saying “Come on – let there be some tilapia on clearance - Danny needs some fish!”
Has the fish always tasted fresh?
I have stopped buying chicken on sale on Sundays at one shop, because I know the new shipment arrives Monday, and they’re clearing out old stock. I did pick up on it turning the last times I bought it on sale. Not completely bad, but a hint of decay which turns me off.
I am a super taster so it wrecks my meal if I can taste it going off.
I have had bad luck with fresh sockeye salmon that was full price but travelled too far from BC. I’m really hesitant to buy fish on sale or clearance , unless it’s frozen fish.
I also figured out that one local fish market was smoking the Atlantic salmon that was getting a bit too old. I could taste the ammonia through the smoked fish. Gotta start with good fresh fish to make it good smoked fish.
What do you like about tilapia?
Yes… never had a problem. The guy in charge of Meat/Fish department is very conscientious and stays on top of the inventory.
I don’t know, I just enjoy it over other fish. Salmon is a close second, but that is usually out of my price range.
I lightly dredge the tilapia in flour, sprinkle a little lemon pepper on top and gently spritz it with some olive oil spray. I bake it until it hits 145-150 (F) then serve.
I know the most impactful thing i could do to save money on groceries would be to purchase a share of a whole animal direct from a farmer. I don’t buy or eat processed food; the biggest chunk of my spend is protein. And yet I have yet to pull the trigger on this.
Curious what pricing for this is near you. Some of my family buy this way, and the quality is generally better than supermarket or specialty grocer meat, but the per-lb price when we have calculated it is has been breakeven at best. Beef, lamb, goat.
Whereabouts do they live?
California and Boston
That is certainly true for my CSA subscription.
I go to small butchers in Chinatown that break down a whole pig sourced from the same places as mainstream supermarkets like Smithfield. Pork belly and ribs usuaully around $4/lb and pork chops $3/lb. Poultry is similar in price as anywhere . Limited beef however. In any case, I’m cutting back on animal protein and increasing plant protein for general health reasons. Rising prices are not a good trend but you can find some positives, like eat more plant.
What does it include?
I get what’s called “a small box”, which I think includes about 3-5 fruit and/or veg items, depending on the price that is set.
Here’s a link
…and I think I posted a screenshot of one of my orders somewhere.
ETA Here it is
Me too. My neighbor raises good beef. he charges me $3/lb, but I’m obviously not bringing home porterhouses.
“Processed food” is broad, and anything dairy, besides raw milk, is a processed food. I need my dairy goodies; raw milk included.
Yes, but you and most everyone else knows what I mean when I say that
I’ve calculated that our household of 2 meat-eaters would take more than 2 years to get through even a quarter-share of beef. So I settle for meat bundles from the butcher - saving a couple dollars per pound. But my niece’s family of 6 is definitely saving money with their yearly purchase of a half, last year averaging $3 pound for everything from (lots of) ground beef to roasts to steaks. I’m curious and will ask her about this year’s pricing.
I try to buy 20 lbs. at a time. Empty nesting, two people just can’t get a quarter done in a year.
I might go in with my brother. That would be four people.
