Not much on sale this week – boneless skinless chicken breasts, potatoes and peanut butter. I will make peanut butter / lemon chicken. Sunshine likes this meal, so I definitely do that.

I just looked up a recipe for peanut butter rice – maybe I’ll give it a try. I’ll try to pair it with some leftover sausage rolls I have in the freezer.

Along the same lines, Senegalese Chicken and Peanut soup might be an idea. My first bowls of it were from a chain restaurant called Hale and Hearty 28 years ago. The original went bankrupt and the restaurant has re-opened under new ownership.

I try to make vegetarian meals from time to time, but they are met with mixed reviews. Although, she did like the cabbage soup I served in a bread bowl. I keep hoping cabbage will be on sale, but nothing lately.

I have tried so many lentil meals, but she doesn’t like lentils at all. She’ll eat them, but really isn’t happy about it. So I try not to serve them to her.

Sunshine really likes some type of meat with her meals, beef is her favorite. “Where’s the beef??”

Chicken, fish and pork are acceptable.

Anything tofu or Textured Vegetable Protein (TVP) are a hard “NO”!!

Cabbage ALWAYS goes on sale in NJ around St Patrick’s Day. I recall it being 17 cents a pound but who knows what it will be like this year.

I finally pulled the trigger on a “butcher’s box” at the country butcher where I buy all our meat. They put them together every so often and advertise them, and sell them til they’re sold out. I was surveying the options for a couple cycles, trying to see if I could find a box that contained everything we typically eat, but nothing we don’t (Mom isn’t hugely flexible.)

I finally pulled the trigger last weekend and brought a nice one home, after speaking with the butcher personally to inquire about the % savings each box represented (he said between 10 and 15%, and that was enough to sway me.) Everything was portioned and frozen in butcher paper; I’ll list out the contents and what I paid tomorrow.

I also asked about the chicken-only butcher boxes because we eat a lot of chicken, but only in three cuts: (1) whole chickens, (2) BLSL thighs (I grill 3-5 thighs a week and eat them cold for lunches.) and (3) BLSL breasts, which Mom prefers. Anyway there were no chicken boxes with just those things, but the butcher told me I could get cost savings by buying bulk bags of thighs or breasts. The cost per pound for the breasts was quite a savings if purchased in bulk, so I also brought a bag home, and since those weren’t frozen, I portioned and froze the breasts for later.

Feels good to have this stuff stashed away, and to have saved some $$ doing it.

Cabbage usually comes way down in price as St. Patrick’s Day approaches. However, things may be different this year…

I grabbed these hot dogs at Dollar Tree on clearance for 25 cents. I’m going to make “Glen and Friends Cooking” (youtube) Hot Dog Soup. When I purchased them I didn’t notice that they were only 10 ounces. I know the hot dog manufacturers went from 16 ounce packages to 12 ounce, but when did they start making 10 ounce packages?? I guess this is more “shrinkflation” – so a little less hot dog meat in tomorrow’s hot dog soup.

Nothing on sale this week that can be a main course. One store does have asparagus on sale, so that can be a side.

I have a good amount of chicken and some brats in the freezer – so it looks like I’ll be leaning on them, that and some frozen leftovers. Maybe I’ll find something on clearance that I’ll be able to do something with.

Has anyone else noticed that the weekly grocery store sale circulars are getting smaller and with less deals.

It varies - Last week it was slim offerings but this time It’s BOGO week at my store, with good options for mains/proteins. My freezer was already close to capacity so I limited my selections to two 4-packs of bone-in chicken thighs, one of which will be supper tonight/lunch tomorrow. And Crab Delights - small packages are easy to fit in the freezer.

My store offers online list-making, with a way to look at ALL items that are sale priced. There’s limited print space to feature items, and it’s possible your store is investing less in printed ads but still has many more items on sale in-store,
