Mr Bean is happy to help finish just about whatever we have in the house but I’m not sure if even he could drink a bottle of Creme de Menthe. The Amaretto and Triple Sec would have been long gone.
I always wanted to try a Grasshopper when I was underage, and then, by the time I was of age, they never seemed to be offered at any bars. I still haven’t tried one and I’ve been legal now for 32 years.
Maybe I should make one once when I fall off my limited sugar wagon.
It took me 21 years to use up my crème de menthe. My Autumm likes mint with chocolate so a splash went into most batches of brownies a tiny bit into whipped cream for a minty flavor with something chocolate. A grasshopper ice cream cake for my grad school class birthday treat was what I first bought it for
That sounds like a great a idea. I may have to try one too.
Old joke: A grasshopper walks into a bar. Bartender says, Hey, there’s a drink named for you! Grasshopper says, You have a drink named Fred?
I’ve never tried one, either. I doubt if I even have any crème de menthe. They did look exotic when I was a kid.
What I miss is Vandermint in those lovely blue and white bottles with the tulip tops. Can’t get it here in the US anywhere anymore. I’ve seen recipes to recreate it. (it’s chocolate mint liqueur for the uninitiated). Now that I could have put a straw into.
A Grasshoppers or a Pink Lady, those were the days.
I stopped off at the grocery store on the way home from an early dentist appointment and found a (clearance) 10 piece value pack of bone-in drumsticks and thighs marked down to $2.51. I have no idea why it was marked so low, but I grabbed it. Sunshine enjoys bone-in dark meat, so this will make 5 meals for her. I’m not a fan of bone-in chicken, so I’ll have “Oodles of Noodles” on those nights – but YEA!! 50 cents a meal (for the protein) for my girl!
3 bags of groceries came to $181 CAD today. LOL. It’s getting worse each week.
I think I need one of each this weekend.
That’s not really a helpful unit - 3 bags of meat for that price would be cheap, 3 bags of apples not so much
I know.
I could take a photo of the receipt.
Roughly:
$20 of Lake Erie Perch ($27/ lb)
$20 scallops ($40/lb)
$50 for a 2 lb Prime Rib
$30 for 14 ears of imported corn
$7 for 1 lb dried prunes
$10 for 1 lb dried apricots
$5 for a 1 l tetrapak of chicken broth
$5 for a 1 l tetrapak of beef broth
$1.89 for a can of Romano beans
$8.99 for 1 lb of unsalted butter (it would be $2.50
cheaper if I bought generic butter that wasn’t wrapped in sticks)
$5 for pineapple
$5 for some pecans
This week’s bargain was a $5 jar of peanut butter. I’m trying to stay within my $50 a week budget although two weeks I went over budget. I picked up my last bag of groceries tonight so my total for a singleton this week came to $48.
Nothing on sale this week (other than cheese), so I’ll dig the freezer. I feel like there is going to be quite a bit of chicken consumed over the next week.
I guess that is fine, as long as we don’t start growing feathers…
Do you buy cheese on sale or discount and freeze it for another time?
Yes… I try to get it in block form (2 pound block), freeze it, thaw it slightly, shred what I need and re-freeze it for a later date.
If you still have some white beans in your pantry white chicken chili is always a hit around here. I made a big batch last night and half went into the freezer
I’ve got some (dry) pinto beans, but that’s a great idea!!
Chicken chili sounds good!!
These photos are from today’s trip to a regular chain grocery store in Canada, Sobeys. The Canadian dollar is worth $0.70 USD today.
$54.90/ kg for Parmigiano Reggiano.
$2.79 Canadian for the most basic Kraft Dinner, which tends to be a budget dinner for many Canadians, especially students.
Bush’s beans used to cost $0.20- $0.50 more per can than Canadian Heinz beans. It’s rare to see the regular price ($2.79) lower than Heinz Canadian beans ($2.99).
Heinz imported UK beans cost more than both Bush’s and Heinz Canadian beans.
$4.99 for a regular bag of Tostitos.
Renée’s refrigerated salad dressing is something like Marie’s. $6.49/ jar.
$3.99/ head of leaf lettuce.
With my $200 spend yesterday at the indie grocery store, for my meat, fish and produce, and $150 spend at the chains grocery store for pantry goods, I’m continuing to spend $350 CAD/ week at the grocery store this month for 3 people.
I also spent $30 at a Portuguese bakery, $15 at a French bakery, and $30 at an independent produce shop/ greengrocer on Sunday.
Total groceries for this week added up to $425 CAD.
If I did my calculations correctly, CDN$54.90/ kg for Parmigiano Reggiano is US$17.40/lb, which is actually cheaper than here in Berkeley.
